Ernst Karl Graf von Hertzberg (born May 24, 1789 in Anklam ; † December 6, 1856 in Erfurt ) was a Prussian major general and commander of the 8th Landwehr Brigade.

Life

His grandfather was the Prussian Lieutenant General Karl von Hertzberg , who was raised to the Prussian count status in 1786. His parents were Hans Christian Wilhelm von Hertzberg (1768–1837) and his wife Johanna Charlotte, née Otto (* 1753), widow of Captain Anton Konrad von Radolinski.

Military career

Hertzberg came on April 4, 1800 as a portepeefähnrich in the infantry regiment "von Sanitz" of the Prussian Army and advanced to the end of October 1805 to secondary lieutenant . In the Fourth Coalition War he was wounded on the right foot in the Battle of Jena , he came to Magdeburg and was made inactive after the fortress surrendered.

After the Peace of Tilsit he was aggregated to the 1st Silesian Infantry Regiment on February 19, 1810 and assigned there on August 6, 1810. During the campaign against Russia in 1812 he fought in the battles near Wollgund, Kyopen and Ruhenthal.

He was promoted to Prime Lieutenant on June 8, 1813 and fought during the Wars of Liberation in the battles of Großgörschen , Bautzen , Dresden , Kulm , Leipzig , La Rothiere , Paris and Belle Alliance . He was also in the battles at Königswartha, Arbesau, Jeanvillers and the siege of Erfurt . During that time he was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd class on June 27, 1813 , became a staff captain on October 9, 1814 and a captain and company commander on February 12, 1815 .

On March 30, 1824, he joined the 2nd Battalion of the 2nd Landwehr Regiment as a major and commander. On March 30, 1834, he joined the 14th Infantry Regiment as a battalion commander. On March 30, 1838 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and entrusted with the management of the 2nd infantry regiment . There he was confirmed as commander on May 28, 1838. On June 8, 1838 he received the St. Stanislaus Order III. Class. On March 30, 1840, he was promoted to colonel. On May 16, 1844, he was transferred to the 8th Landwehr Brigade as commander. On June 5, 1844, he received a grant of 1000 thalers for his move. On January 31, 1846, he was promoted to major general. In 1847 he received the Order of the Red Eagle II. Class with Oak Leaves and on September 5, 1848, he retired. He died on December 6, 1856 in Erfurt and was buried there on December 9, 1856.

His division commander August von Hedemann wrote about him in 1847: “A dutiful officer, of benevolent character and interest. Devoted to his majesty. He knows exactly what the armed forces are, and he judges them from the right point of view. Before the troops he showed himself to be an experienced leader. Suitable for transportation on his tour. "

Hertzberg married on June 1, 1818 in Grünhübel, Breslau district, Wilhelmine Rogalla von Bieberstein (1797–1877). The couple had several children:
