Julius Wilhelm Karl Graf von Hertzberg (born January 18, 1826 in Stralsund , † March 23, 1887 in Kassel ) was a Prussian major general and commander of the 49th Infantry Brigade (1st Grand Ducal Hessian) .

Life

Julius was a son of the Prussian major general Karl von Hertzberg (1789-1856) and his wife Wilhelmine, née Rogalla von Bieberstein (1797-1877). His brother Rudolf (1832–1898) also became a Prussian major general.

Career

Hertzberg visited the cadet houses in Potsdam and Berlin . Subsequently he was the personal page of the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV and was transferred on August 10, 1843 with a patent from October 19, 1843 as a second lieutenant to the 38th Infantry Regiment (6th Reserve Regiment) of the Prussian Army . During the March Revolution of 1848 he was involved in street fighting in Frankfurt am Main . During the suppression of the Baden Revolution in 1849 he was adjutant to Lieutenant General von Peucker and took part in the battles near Greater Saxony and Gernsbach .

From February 1, 1851 to January 31, 1852, he was in command of the 2nd Reserve Engineer Company. On September 22, 1852 he was awarded the Rescue Medal on Ribbon . From April 15 to September 30, 1855, he was assigned to the Infantry Training Battalion. Hertzberg then served as regimental adjutant from April 1856 to August 1859 and was promoted to captain by the end of May 1859 . From October 1, 1859 to April 30, 1860, he was in command as a company commander in the Landwehr battalion of his regiment in Wohlau . On September 19, 1860 he was appointed company commander . In this position Hertzberg led his company in 1866 during the war against Austria in the battles near Skalitz and Königgrätz and received a commendation on September 20, 1866 for his brave behavior. With his promotion to major , he was transferred to the Pomeranian Fusilier Regiment No. 34 in Frankfurt am Main on March 5, 1867 , and was appointed commander of the 1st Battalion on May 20, 1867. During the war against France he took part in the siege of Strasbourg and the battle of Belfort as well as the skirmishes at Plittersdorf, Les Forges , Étuz , Pasques , Longeau , Villersexel and Saint-Fergeux . Awarded both classes of the Iron Cross , Hertzberg was transferred to Rastatt after the peace treaty as commander of the 1st Battalion in the 3rd Baden Infantry Regiment No. 111 and promoted to lieutenant colonel on January 18, 1873 .
