Johann Karl Joseph von Schon (born March 11, 1765 in Tempelburg , † June 9, 1818 in Graudenz ) was a Prussian major general and commander of the fortress Graudenz .

Karl was the son of the Prussian major and squadron chief in the hussar regiment "von Belling" Johann Joseph von Schon (1717–1771) and his wife Johann Christiane Margarete, née von Eitz.

Military career

Already came to Stolp as a cadet on May 16, 1772 and to Berlin on April 25, 1776 . From there he moved on March 1, 1779 as a private corporal in the infantry regiment "von Hacke" . There he became ensign on March 5, 1780 and second lieutenant on June 23, 1785 . As such, he took part in the campaign in Poland in 1794 . On July 8, 1794, he was first lieutenant , on March 1, 1795, staff captain and on February 1, 1800, captain and company commander . During the Fourth Coalition War Already fought in the Battle of Preussisch Eylau and in the battles near Osterode, Mohrungen, Liebstadt, on the Passarge and near Waltersdorf.

After the Peace of Tilsit he became major and commander in the Pomeranian Grenadier Battalion on October 8, 1810 . The salary of a staff officer was supposed to be received, but on February 2, 1810 he was informed that it was not possible. For this he received 100 thalers as a gift from the king. On October 1, 1811, he was given the command of the 1st Pomeranian Infantry Regiment , this time with the salary of a staff officer. On March 2, 1812, he was appointed regiment commander and from January 4, 1813, Already received the corresponding salary. During the Wars of Liberation he was wounded in a battle near Vehlitz and earned the Iron Cross, 2nd class. He also fought at Hoogstaeten, Lier, Courtray, Swewegham and the battles at Großbeeren , Dennewitz , Leipzig , Ligny and the sieges of Namur and Maubeuge. During this time he became a lieutenant colonel on August 11, 1813 . On October 21, 1813 he received the Iron Cross 1st class at Dennewitz and on December 8, 1813 he was made a colonel . In addition, he received the Commander's Cross of the Order of the Sword on February 12, 1814, and the Order of Pour le Mérite on May 31, 1814 .

On April 10, 1815, he became commander of the 7th Infantry Brigade , but on December 12, 1815, he was transferred to Graudenz as a commander. There he received on December 10, 1816 permission to wear the Order of St. Vladimir III. Class. On March 30, 1817, he was promoted to major general before he died on June 9, 1818 in Graudenz.

Juliane Auguste Wilhelmine von Donop (1779–1847) already married on November 15, 1797 in Warsaw . The couple had several children:

The king was grateful for his performance even later. The widow received 200 thalers in support for the death of her husband. On May 14, 1835, she received another 200 thalers. His son, who later became King Friedrich Wilhelm IV , commander of Schon's former regiment, also gave the general's granddaughter, Fraulein Lettgau, a support of 300 thalers until her husband was promoted to captain on her marriage to Second Lieutenant von Weise.
