action

The clumsy Peter Schlönzke works as a sandwich deliverer in the family business and is a big fan of the entertainment show Witzischkeit knows no bounds from presenter Heinz Wäscher. His mother signs him up for a talent show on the show. Although he cannot win the talent competition, he meets the sound engineer Ulla in the building of the station, who gets him a job as a cable helper. He now gets an insight into the production of his favorite show and realizes that Heinz Wäscher is by no means as nice as he always looks on TV, but a self-loving choleric who tyrannizes the employees on the set with his arrogance and his unbearable starry airs. In a live broadcast, Schlönzke is used as the “happy lucky bunny”. When he gets angry in the course of the program and insults Wäscher, the program director is so enthusiastic that he offers Schlönzke the moderator's seat.

A year later, Schlönzke lives in a luxurious apartment and plagues his environment with the same starry airs as washer-men before him. He has hardly any contact with his family and his relationship with his girlfriend Ulla is strained. When criticism arises because of falling audience ratings, Schlönzke is also dismissed. Little Bettina, who won the talent competition at the time, takes his place.

production

Hape Kerkeling

Hape Kerkeling, who directed and co-wrote the script, took on the leading role of Peter Schlönzke. Heinz Schenk , who had previously become famous as the presenter of the entertainment program Zum Blauen Bock , played the irascible presenter Heinz Wäscher. Elisabeth Volkmann took over the role of Hilde Schlönzke, Peter's mother . The grandparents were played by Margret Homeyer and Dirk Dautzenberg . Two members of the punk band Falling Brieftauben played two cable aids and performed their title Pa-Pa-Paderborn at Peter Schlönzke's birthday party . Hape Kerkeling's nephew Andreas Kerkeling played the young Peter Schlönzke from 1968.

In No Pardon there are many running gags that actually have nothing to do with the plot. Recurring elements include a. the "Batzen" dog food advertising ("... then give your dog blobs - but only the whole blob"), little Bettina as a supposed child prodigy, whose mother always completes the appearance with at least one plastic bag, secretary Karin, who always asks if anyone wants a "Käffchen" the wailing grandmother, who at that time alone with a night carts had to go through the streets, the statement "and good night." and the question "well, how was it?", by different people are taken up in the course of the film, the fact that Wäscher is written several times with "e" instead of "ä", for example when others are signing autograph cards for him, as well as a certain hen who is constantly being talked about (because, from the point of view of Peter's grandparents whose role model should be), although he is never seen. As a final gag, the doorbell rings at the Schlönzke house and Henne surprisingly stands on the mat, but this time again she cannot be seen.

The scenes that play in the television studio were filmed in the studios of the German television broadcaster (TV of the GDR) in Berlin-Adlershof , which was just being handled at the time .

reception

No Pardon was released in German cinemas on February 25, 1993 and was seen by 564,000 people.

The film received various reviews from the critics. In the lexicon of international film there is no positive rating to be read: “A satirical description of human and artistically productive conditions behind the scenes of a mass medium, based on relevant models. The intention of the debut film to disillusion common perceptions of the “wonder world” of television is only partially achieved through references to the merciless and degrading wear and tear in modern media business. Otherwise, old gags, bland jokes and flat type comics dominate. "

The Süddeutsche Zeitung did not see its expectations of the film met, but it was still able to win something good: “It did not turn out to be a film about the apprenticeship and wandering years in the television landscape. Never mind. "No pardon" is still very funny. "

Der Spiegel noted that although it was possible to illustrate the “bitter reality” of the TV business as a “creepy glitter revue”, the film itself was “only moderately funny because of the punched lines”.

On the other hand, Kein Pardon received a good rating from the Kölnische Rundschau : "You can tell that someone has created the satirical yardstick here who is familiar with the profession."

musical

Based on the script, comedian Thomas Hermanns developed the idea for the musical together with Hape Kerkeling. The world premiere of the musical No Pardon - The Musical took place on November 12, 2011 in the Capitol Theater Düsseldorf under the direction of Alex Balga . Dirk Bach (who already had a brief appearance in the film as Peter Schlönzke's sketch partner) was seen as Heinz Wäscher with interruptions from the premiere until the end of April 2012. From May to July 2012 Thomas Hermanns himself and entertainer Achim Mentzel slip into the role of the self-loving presenter in selected shows . Most of the music comes from Achim Hagemann .
