Kevin Alphonso Sheppard (born September 17, 1979 on Saint Croix ) is a retired American basketball and soccer player . During his studies in the "motherland" United States, Sheppard was active as a national player for the basketball and soccer national team of the US American suburb, the US Virgin Islands , where he was born. In his two appearances for the national soccer team of the American Virgin Islands he scored one goal each, making him the record scorer in this selection as of 2014. After completing his studies, Sheppard became a professional basketball player and mostly only played for a short time for various clubs in Venezuela , Puerto Rico , Israel , Argentina and the US Minor League Continental Basketball Association . From 2008 Sheppard also played regularly for clubs in Iran . It was Sheppard object of American US in the media vielrezensierten documentary The Iran Job of the German-American filmmaker Till Schauder , the next meetings Sheppard with Iranians in everyday life also look into the Iranian society in the days of the 2009 Iranian presidential election protests allowed . Sheppard ended his active career in 2011.

Career

Sheppard studied in the "motherland" United States of the American Virgin Islands at Jacksonville University , where he played football and basketball for the college team Dolphins in the Atlantic Sun Conference (A-Sun) of the NCAA from 1998 . After he had only completed one championship game for the basketball team as a “ freshman ”, he was later one of the starters of the team and had in his last two seasons, in which he was in the “All-Conference Second Team” of the A-Sun, among the ten The best player in the conference was chosen, an average of over 30 minutes playing time per game. As a player of the soccer team, he was also appointed to the national team of the American Virgin Islands, which was officially founded in 1998, for which he scored the respective goals for the Virgin Islands in his only two appearances in qualifying for the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2003 in the defeat against the Dominican Republic . This made him the record scorer in the young history of the national team; only Reid Klopp was able to catch up with more stakes in 2011. When Sheppard finished his studies in 2003, he was next to 1,290 points scored with 427 assists, the third-best assists in the history of this university team. With the national basketball team of the American Virgin Islands , Sheppard lost in the semi-finals of the Centrobasket 2003 in Culiacan with just one point difference to defending champion Puerto Rico and missed a medal in the "small final" for third place after a defeat with two points difference against host Mexico , which one was already defeated in the preliminary round by one point. In the qualifying tournament for the Olympic basketball tournament in 2004 , which took place two months later, the selection to top scorer Sheppard only conceded defeats in four games and thus missed the qualification.

However, Sheppard's achievements were not enough to be considered in the 2003 NBA Draft by a club in the highest-endowed professional league NBA . Instead, he began a professional career in Venezuela, in order to recommend himself for higher tasks in the Baloncesto Superior Nacional (BSN) in Puerto Rico in the summer of 2004 . However, he then played again in Venezuela before he was also active for Maccabi from Rishon LeZion in the Israeli Ligat ha'Al in the first half of 2005 . He also played in Argentina in 2005 before returning to the BSN in 2006. After the selection of the American Virgin Islands had disappointed at the Caribbean Championships in 2004, they lost to top scorer Sheppard 2006 only the final game against hosts Jamaica , against which they had won in the preliminary round. In the subsequent Centrobasket in Panama City , it was enough in the semifinals to win a narrow victory with one point difference over the Caribbean neighbor Puero Rico. In the final, as in the preliminary round, they lost to host Panama . Then Sheppard was next to Pele Paelay at the SkyRockets from Minot (North Dakota) in the US Minor League CBA under contract. After Sheppard had played again in Venezuela in 2007, the selection of the American Virgin Islands after the silver medal at the Centrobasket 2006 was qualified for the continental competitions at the 2007 American Championship , in which, however, all four preliminary round games were lost and an Olympic qualification was missed again.

After another engagement in the BSN in 2008 Sheppard went to Iran for the following season 2008/09, where he played for the team from Shiraz . During this engagement he was accompanied by the German-American filmmaker Till Schauder. After losing his journalistic accreditation, he documented the daily encounters of the African American Sheppard with Iranians, partly in secret, while the international relations of his country of origin, which were historically burdened after the hostage-taking of Tehran in 1979, recently under the presidency of George W. Bush with the " Axis of Evil ”had deteriorated again. This opened up a glimpse of part of Iranian society in the run-up to the protests after the Iranian presidential elections in 2009 . Schauder's portrait of Sheppard's involvement in Iran was only published in 2012 after a crowdfunding initiative on Kickstarter.com under the title The Iran Job as a highly acclaimed and later award-winning documentary. With the selection of the American Virgin Islands, Sheppard was again without a chance after another silver medal at the Centrobasket 2008 at the American Championships 2009 , although he was again the team's top scorer in the four preliminary round defeats before Walter Hodge , who played in a similar position . Sheppard remained connected to Iran and subsequently played for the basketball team at Azad University in the capital Tehran , before ending his active career with the US Virgin Islands national team after winning the Caribbean Championship in 2011.
