history

As in other countries, the Kolping Society in Feldkirch began as a Catholic community for journeymen . The association was founded in Feldkirch in 1859 as the “Catholic journeyman association” by pastor Fidel Häusle (died June 8, 1869) at the suggestion of the carpenter journeyman Lorenz Ris from Amberg . It is the oldest still existing journeyman's association in Vorarlberg. The approval of the association's statutes took place on December 8, 1858, the actual founding date is February 2, 1859. This means that the Feldkircher journeyman association is also one of the earliest founded in the entire Kolping Society in Austria. Adolf Kolping personally visited the association in Feldkirch. In the following year the association was founded, the association had 70 members.

On the occasion of the founding of the association, a service was held in the Catholic basilica in Rankweil and an evening festive event. The assembly appointed pastor Fidel Häusle as the first association president , and the vicariate general secretary Thomas Fritsch from Feldkirch became his deputy . Thomas Fritsch (d. November 11, 1875) succeeded him as President in 1869.

In 1865 a library was established for the members of the journeyman's association. In 1867 this library consisted of 306 volumes .

According to the annual report of February 7, 1868, the association had 78 honorary members at the end of 1867. At that time the members were offered social support: free lessons in arithmetic , written essays , calligraphy and declamation . In addition, there was now a club library with 499 volumes and the club health insurance fund contained 78 guilders and 30 kroner . Six journeymen received support from it. From 1872 bookkeeping and religion were also taught and the association also ran a savings bank .

Already 16 years after it was founded, the journeyman's association had 1,099 journeymen as members, a fortune in the journeyman's health insurance fund of 162 guilders and a library with 417 volumes. In 1875 , the "Blumsche Stadel" was bought on Goaßacker Platz, today Jahnplatz , and converted into a journeyman's house (Kolpinghaus) that still exists today. The purchase was made possible by Madam Muther , who is described as a “noble benefactress ” . Thomas Fritsch's successor was Anton Walter (died 1917).

In the association's report of February 3, 1878, it is stated that the association has taken on 1521 journeymen since 1859 (year of foundation) and 72 new journeymen joined in 1877. More than 100 journeymen found accommodation in the Kolping House in 1877. In this report by the President, Anton Walter, reference is made to the social question : With the maintenance of the Catholic journeyman's association, part of the social question is resolved, and people in higher circles are slowly beginning to show an interest in the poorer working population. Had this happened earlier, socialism would not have been able to gain this expansion.

On November 16, 1887, “50 gentlemen of the clerical and secular class” gathered in the hall of the Catholic Journeyman's Association in Feldkirch to discuss the establishment of a teachers' college in Vorarlberg led in the Catholic spirit. This should in commemoration of the fortieth anniversary of the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph I to be built. On 26 November 1888, the new could Lehrerbildungsanstalt with 24 candidates and three teachers from the Order of Christian Brothers are opened .

The expansion of the Kolping House was a constant concern and in the report of September 18, 1895 it is stated: The means for expanding our house are still quite in a mess. We hope to be able to improve our finances with the drama in Dornbirn. These events were financially successful and on February 3, 1900, the founding party was held in the newly restored hall .

On September 12, 1909, the 50th anniversary of the journeyman's association in Feldkirch was celebrated with a festive mass at 10:30 a.m. and a subsequent procession through the city, and at 8:00 p.m. with a festive event in the hall of the Kolping House, which was also attended by the president of the main journeyman's association arrived from Vienna.

Since the end of the 1960s, women and girls in Feldkirch have also been able to become members of the individual Kolping Families and the renaming of the "Catholic Journeyman's Associations and Houses" in Austria to "Kolping Families and Kolping Houses" took place.

After the expansion of the attic and further adaptation work, the club's premises were moved to the attic and there are events as well as free legal advice for club members once a month and Caritas facilities have been housed in the house since 1991 (e.g. emergency sleeping quarters with constant care and refugee aid ).
