Typical landscape in the Krakow-Czestochowa Jura

The Kraków-Częstochowska Jura ( Jura Krakowsko-Częstochowska / Wyżyna Krakowsko-Częstochowska ) is a low mountain range in southern Poland on the territory of the Silesian and Lesser Poland Voivodeships . It represents the eastern part of the Krakow-Silesian Highlands and borders in the north on the Polish Plain, in the east on the Lesser Poland Highlands, in the south on the Vistula Valley and in the west on the Silesian highlands and extends from Czestochowa to Krakow . Its extension, the Wielun Highlands, extends in a north-westerly direction to the city of Wieluń . The mountains are characterized by limestone cliffs and have numerous karst features ( stalactite caves , rock massifs and towers , sinkholes, etc.) as well as the largest sandy desert in Central Europe ( Błędów Desert ).

The heights of the Jura are crowned with a number of castles and palaces, the so-called Adlerhorst castles , which have protected the south-western border of Poland since the 14th century and enabled rapid communication by means of light and smoke signals from Krakow to Czestochowa.

There are several attractive sport climbing areas in the Jura . The long-distance hiking trail and the eagle nests cycle path connect the most interesting landscapes and sights between Krakow and Czestochowa.

In the area of the national park there are around 400 caves and other karst formations such as karst springs , notched valleys , karst surfaces and funnels.

The number of animal species is estimated at 12,000. The native mammals include badger , dormouse , ermine , beaver and bat .

The oldest traces of human presence in this area date from the Upper Paleolithic and are around 120,000 years old.
