The Stuttgart cultural region (spelling: KulturRegion Stuttgart ) is an amalgamation of 43 municipalities, three associations and the Stuttgart Region Association , which realizes inter-municipal cultural projects in the Stuttgart region.

The goal of the non-profit association is to shape the cultural appearance of the region with events and joint communication measures. It was founded in 1991 to strengthen regional cooperation in the field of culture. Every two years, the inter-municipal association realizes a project on regional and social issues, most recently the production art festival "Torque" (2018), the light art festival "Aufstiege" (2016) and "Garden of Eden" (2014). Various cultural actors are involved in the projects. They implement their ideas in events, actions in public spaces, installations, workshops and lectures. By bundling the activities, the Stuttgart cultural region tries on the one hand to make the existing cultural offerings visible and on the other hand to promote new developments.

History of the Stuttgart cultural region

Between 1986 and 1991 the working group “Olympia Application Stuttgart Region” dealt with a possible application from Stuttgart for the Olympic Games in 2004. This working group led to inter-municipal cooperation in the region. Three commissions concentrated on the areas of “sports technology”, “infrastructure” and “culture”. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the Stuttgart area withdrew its Olympic application in 1990 in favor of Berlin. On January 8, 1991, at the founding meeting at Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart, the association “Intercommunal Culture Promotion Region Stuttgart eV” (short form: “KulturRegion Stuttgart”) was founded as the successor to the Culture Commission. 19 municipalities were among the founding members. The first major cultural project was “Platzverführung 1992/93”, an international sculpture project in 18 cities. Further projects u. a. in the fields of fine arts, literature, music, dance, children's and youth theater, photography and architecture followed. In a strategy process, supported by the cultural experts Oliver Scheytt GmbH, a new, forward-looking approach for the Stuttgart cultural region was drawn up in 2011 with the involvement of municipal representatives, cultural experts and representatives from the Stuttgart region. In 2013, for the first time, all member municipalities took part in the “See what the neighbor creates” project, each with a representative cultural event for the municipality. Bettina Pau has been the managing director of the Stuttgart cultural region since September 2016.

aims

The purpose of the association is to strengthen and maintain intercommunal cultural work in the Stuttgart region. The Stuttgart cultural region realizes joint cultural events and projects as well as communication measures with the aim of shaping the cultural appearance of the region. The cooperative themed years under an artistic direction are intended to create a profile for the region. The Stuttgart cultural region tries to promote the cultural identification of the residents with “their” region and to create incentives for the population to visit other municipalities in the region. The cooperation should also serve the exchange of association members and be the basis for cultural-political discourses and a platform for further networking.
