The murder of Johann Joachim Winckelmann
The German archaeologist and art writer Johann Joachim Winckelmann , who lives in Rome, embarks on a journey together with the sculptor Bartolomeo Cavaceppi that will lead him to old and new friends in his homeland. An illness and the troubles of the trip lead to a melancholy attack, which already lets him break off the trip in Regensburg. On the way back he visits Vienna and is received by Empress Maria Theresia . He received four gold and silver medals from her for his scientific merits. After another fever, he continues his return journey. In Trieste he stops at the Hotel Locanda Grande , where he meets the convicted chef Francesco Arcangeli . On the morning of June 8th, Arcangeli tries to strangle Winckelmann with a rope and steal the coins. When this fails, he stabs him with a knife. Winckelmann bleeds to death six hours after the attack, but can still provide extensive information on what happened.
