The Château des Hayes

La Carneille is a village and a former French commune with 590 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Orne department in the Normandy region . It belonged to the canton of Athis-de-l'Orne and the Arrondissement of Argentan .

With effect from January 1, 2016, the previous communes of Athis-de-l'Orne , Bréel , La Carneille , Notre-Dame-du-Rocher , Ronfeugerai , Ségrie-Fontaine , Taillebois and Les Tourailles became a nouvelle commune with the name Athis -Val de Rouvre and have the status of a Commune déléguée in the new municipality . The administrative headquarters are in Athis-de-l'Orne.

geography

The place is at the intersection of the roads from Domfront to Falaise and from Condé-sur-Noireau to Javron-les-Chapelles . The municipality is traversed by the Rouvre river and the Gine and Meheudin streams .

Until 2016, the neighboring communities of La Carneille were Taillebois in the north, Notre-Dame-du-Rocher in the northeast, Sainte-Honorine-la-Guillaume in the east, Les Tourailles in the southeast, Durcet and Landigou in the south and Ronfeugerai in the west.

At the time of the French Revolution , the community still had almost 1,400 inhabitants. In 1861 the maximum population was reached with 1678. As a result, the population decreased to 480 residents in 1990. A slight increase was then recorded again.

History and culture

The first documented name of the place was Cairnailo . Later it developed through Cairnuilla , Chernilla , Quernelia and Laquerneille to the current name.

The Logis Trolley house , which is one of the oldest houses in town, used to be the seat of a court with a jurisdiction of 30 parishes. The French King Henry IV was received in the Château du Bois-André . The parish church has a campanile , a separate church tower. In the center there are numerous houses from the 17th and 18th centuries as well as a market hall.

Bertrand de La Hosdinière , who was mayor of the municipality at the end of the 18th century, was a member of the Council of Five Hundred . He voted to behead the king. During the Second World War , parts of the village were destroyed, including the school that was later rebuilt.
