Walzenhausen originally belonged to the Höchst homestead - St. Margrethen in the Rhine Valley . It was then called Unter Hirschberg . This homestead comprised Höchst, St. Margrethen, Fußach via Gaißau up to Walzenhausen and extended further to the border of Thal . The first documentary mention of the farm as "Hostetharro marcha" (the Mark of the Highest) comes from the year 881, the first documentary mention of Walzenhausen comes from the year 1320. After the Appenzell Wars , Walzenhausen joined the Appenzell family and became part of the Appenzell family Rhode Trogen. But it was not until the 16th century before the territorial claims of the old court could be transferred. During the Reformation , most of the residents of Unter Hirschberg converted to the new faith and built their own church. With the construction of the church, Walzenhausen also constituted itself as an independent community.
Originally the economy of Walzenhausen was characterized purely by agriculture. In addition, there was viticulture, which was operated until 1910. The textile industry developed in Walzenhausen from the 16th century, first canvas, and from 1740 cotton processing. From 1850 to 1920 Walzenhausen was an important location for coarse embroidery and rideaux manufacture (see St. Gallen embroidery ). This heyday ended with the Great Depression.
On June 27, 1896, the mountain railway from the valley station Ruderbach (St. Margrethen) in the Rhine Valley was opened. This promoted the creation of a climatic health resort. A bath house was opened in 1910. In 1993 the first pain clinic in Switzerland opened its doors in Walzenhausen, which is now operated as a clinic for neurological and orthopedic rehabilitation.
