Lauren Nicole Holiday (* the 30th September 1987 in Indianapolis , Indiana as Lauren Nicole Cheney ) is a former American football player . She played for FC Kansas City and for the US national team .

life and career

Holiday was born with a heart defect and had open heart surgery when he was three. Since doctors advised parents that she should exercise to strengthen the heart, she started playing soccer and basketball at an early age and was an outstanding soccer player even before her sixth birthday. From six to twelve years old she played in boys' teams and then moved to Carmel United Heat . During her time at Ben Davis High School as well as at UCLA , she received several awards and was one of the top scorer who scored several game-winning goals. In 2009 she played for Pali Blues in the W-League , since 2010 in the WPS for the Boston Breakers .

Holiday played through several US youth teams and at the age of 17 was part of the squad that finished third at the 2004 Women's U-19 World Cup in Thailand , appearing in all six games and scoring two goals. In 2005 she won the Nordic Cup as the youngest member of the squad with the U-21s , scoring 2 goals in 4 games. In 2006 she won the 2006 CONCACAF U-20 Championship for women , scoring four goals, including the decisive goal in the final against Canada to a 3-2 win. She was part of the U-20 team that finished fourth at the U-20 World Cup in Russia after losing on penalties in both the semi-finals and the third-place match. She was used in four games, but missed the last penalty in the penalty shootout of the semifinals.

At the Pan American Games in 2007 she reached the final with the U-20 team, but lost 4-0 to the Brazilian A team , u. a. with Marta .

Holiday was first invited to the training of the senior national team in 2005 and made her first senior international game at the age of 19 on January 26, 2007 in a 0-0 draw against Germany in the four-nation tournament that the USA won. She scored her first international goal on April 14, 2007 against Mexico , when she scored the 5-0 final score in the 88th minute.

In 2008 she was able to win the Algarve Cup, where she contributed a goal. Since Abby Wambach was injured, she was nominated for the Olympic Games in Beijing , but was not used in the group games. Through her substitutions in the following knockout games, she contributed to winning the gold medal.

In 2010 she was able to win the Algarve Cup again and scored the decisive winning goal in the 3-2 final against Germany. At the CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup 2010 you scored two goals. Against France she scored the 1-0 lead in the ninth minute and after the 3-1 victory she was in the final against Japan . The Japanese won it 3-1 on penalties after it was 2-2 after extra time. Holiday already had the chance to make it 1-0 in the 8th minute, but shot just wide. She was replaced in the second half.

Holiday was in the squad for the Olympic football tournament in London and was used in all six games. In the final against Japan on August 9, 2012, she won the gold medal for the second time.

In the 2013 season she played in the newly founded National Women's Soccer League , the highest American professional league in women's football for FC Kansas City .

On May 8, 2014, she completed her 100th international match in a 1-1 draw against Canada as the 30th US player .

She was also called up for the US squad for the 2015 World Cup . It was used in six games. In the second round against Colombia received as Megan Rapinoe the second yellow card , which were both suspended for the quarter-final against China. Against Germany , she then returned to the starting line-up for the semi-final game. In the final against Japan , she scored the third goal in a 5-2 record win and thus the third fastest goal in the history of the final. With the 5: 2 she became world champion for the first time.

On October 25, 2015, she played her last international match in a 3-1 win against Brazil and led the team onto the field as captain. In total, she came to 133 internationals in ten years, in which she scored 24 goals.

Holiday married on July 7, 2013 the professional basketball player Jrue Holiday and took his family name.
