The Leaf River Township is located in northern Illinois around 165 km west of Chicago . The Wisconsin border is around 25 miles north; the Mississippi , which forms the border with Iowa , is about 70 km to the west.

The Leaf River Township is located in the north of Ogle County and borders in the northwest on Stephenson and in the northeast on Winnebago County . Within Ogle County, the Leaf River Township is bordered by Byron Township to the east, Rockvale Township to the southeast, Mount Morris Township to the southwest and Maryland Township to the west .
