Leonhard Goffiné OPraem (born December 6, 1648 in Broich near Jülich ; †  August 11, 1719 in Oberstein ) was a Premonstratensian canon in the Steinfeld / Eifel Abbey and a religious folk writer. He wrote a popular hand postille which, with more than 120 editions and translations into numerous languages, is one of the most widespread religious writings in world literature.

Life

Leonhard Goffiné was born on December 6, 1648 in Broich near Jülich. His parents were Gertrud Bois and Johann Goffiné. According to Backmund, the name Goffiné is of Walloon origin. The mother came from the Cologne patrician family Bois and Wisch.

His work as a religious is recorded in the conventual directory of Steinfeld Abbey . He then entered the Premonstratensian convent of the Steinfeld / Eifel monastery in 1667 and made his profession on July 16, 1669 . From 1671 to 1675 he studied at the Collegium Norbertinum and the old Cologne University theology and was ordained in December 1675 a priest. He celebrated his primacy at the Feast of Mary Candlemas the following year in the Premonstratensian monastery in Dünnwald near Cologne . In this priory , which is under the paternity of the Abbot von Steinfeld, Goffiné had completed his two-year novice period . After his ordination he worked as a chaplain here and in the Premonstratensian convent Ellen near Niederzier , Düren district . On February 26, 1680 he became novice master of Steinfeld Abbey.

His pastoral field of activity extended over the entire Premonstratensian circle of Westphalia . At the end of 1680 he was seconded by Abbot Theodor Firmenich to Clarholz near Gütersloh as pastor . Other positions as pastor until 1696 were Niederehe , Coesfeld , Wehr (Eifel) , Rheinböllen and Bacharach . In the meantime he was called back to Steinfeld several times as a retreat master. Leonhard Goffiné died on August 11, 1719 in Oberstein of an inflammatory bowel disease .

The Goffineweg in Cologne-Dünnwald is named after him.

Title of hand Postille of Leonard Goffiné in the edition of 1818

Hand postille

Goffiné is known for its popular hand Piety, an explanation of the Sonntagsepisteln and - gospels in questions and answers. The original title is Hauspostill or Christ-Catholische briefings of all Sundays and Feyr days of the whole year and was printed in Mainz in 1690 . It was created during Goffiné's time as Vice Curate in Coesfeld (1681–1691). The first ecclesiastical permission to print dates back to 1687. The first edition went to press in 1690 in Mainz. It has not been preserved. The house postil was already widely used during his lifetime, and the sixth print appeared in Cologne in 1710. In the 18th and 19th centuries alone, at least 22 publishers published Goffiné's hand postille.

After 1746 the hand postille was reworked and adapted to the new Roman Missal . The first prints of the new edition appeared in Bamberg and Augsburg in 1780 and 1782. With more than 120 editions today, the work of the Steinfeld Premonstratensian Canons is one of the most widespread works in world literature.

Other works

As early as 1679, Goffiné made the decision to publish his recorded sermons. This resulted in two volumes with Sunday and holiday sermons under the title Soul Light , which were printed in 1705 by Johann Christoph Lochner in Nuremberg.

Probably in connection with his task of carrying out spiritual exercises for his confreres, a work was created with the title Exposition of the Regulations of the Glorious Father and Church Teacher Augustini , which was printed in Cologne in 1692 by Meucher. In it, Goffiné explains and interprets the rules of the order of St. Augustine , according to which the Premonstratensians, as regular canons , shape their communal spiritual life.
