Leopold Friedrich Karl August von Riedel (born November 25, 1799 in Neumarkt in Silesia , † March 17, 1867 in Rehme ) was a Prussian lieutenant general and the first artilleryman to be entrusted with a command of a cavalry brigade.

Life

origin

His parents were Johann Franz Michael von Riedel (1765–1809) and his wife Johanna Eleonore Auguste, née von Jochens. His father was captain of the fusilier battalion "von Erichsen", knight of the order Pour le Mérite and died in Metz in French captivity.

Military career

Riedel visited during the liberation war , the Berlin cadet school and was on 19 April 1817 Portepeefähnrich the 7th Artillery Brigade of the Prussian Army transferred. During his command at the United Artillery and Engineering School in 1817/18 , he was promoted to second lieutenant in mid-October 1817 . On June 26, 1829 he was promoted to Prime Lieutenant and in 1830/31 he was commanded to the teaching squadron. In 1832/33 Riedel was then commander of the ammunition column of the 7th Artillery Brigade and then in 1833/34 leader of the Riding Battery No. 21. On April 26, 1837 he was promoted to captain and transferred to the Riding Battery No. 19. This was followed on April 8, 1841, a service in the Guard Artillery Brigade . He was awarded the Service Cross on June 29, 1842 and was a teacher for Prince Waldemar of Prussia from 1842 to 1843 . On May 8, 1844 he was transferred to the adjutantage and commanded as adjutant of the 2nd artillery inspection. Riedel rose to major on March 22, 1845 and joined the 1st Artillery Brigade on February 13, 1847 as a department commander .

On January 25, 1850 he was transferred to the Poznan Fortress as second in command and on February 9, 1850, he was aggregated to the 1st Artillery Brigade . But on July 16, 1850, he was transferred to the fortress of Koblenz and Ehrenbreitstein as second in command. He was awarded the Hohenzollern Medal on August 23, 1851 and promoted to lieutenant colonel on March 23, 1852 . On July 17, 1852 Riedel was appointed commander of the 3rd Artillery Regiment and promoted to colonel on March 22, 1853 . On July 25, 1857 he came as a commander in the 1st Cavalry Brigade , placed à la suite of his previous regiment in mid-September 1857 and promoted to major general on October 29, 1857 with a patent from October 15, 1857 . On April 21, 1859 he received the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves. For the duration of the mobilization on the occasion of the Sardinian War , Riedel was in 1849 commander of the 1st Cavalry Division . He then resigned from his post as brigade commander before he was transferred to the army officers on November 19, 1859. He then took up residence in Königsberg . From there, due to illness, he was put up for disposal on May 14, 1860 with the character of lieutenant general and the statutory pension . He died on March 17, 1867 in Rehme.

Riedel married Ottilie Johanne Albertine Dorothee Ulrike Wittich (1820-1911) in Münster on January 25, 1838. The couple had several children:
