Leopold Leonhard Raymund Count of Thun and Hohenstein (born April 17, 1748 in Tetschen , † October 22, 1826 at Cibulka Castle near Körbern, today Prague-Košíře) was the 73rd Bishop of Passau and the last Prince-Bishop of Passau .

Life

Leopold Leonhard was the youngest of twelve children from the first marriage of Johann Joseph Graf von Thun and Hohenstein with Maria Christiana Countess von Hohenzollern and Hechingen . He was born at Tetschen Castle .

Thun was 1768 canon in Passau and received on 10 September 1771 Litomerice the priesthood . In 1787 he became cathedral capitular in Passau, in 1795 he was appointed cathedral provost and on May 29, 1796 auxiliary bishop and vicar general .

After the death of his cousin, Prince-Bishop Thomas Johann Graf von Thun und Hohenstein , he was elected as his successor by the cathedral chapter on December 13, 1796. The papal confirmation followed on July 24, 1797. On August 27, 1797 he received the episcopal ordination by the Seckau prince-bishop Joseph Adam Graf von Arco in the Passau cathedral.

When on February 22, 1803 the bishopric of Passau , the secular domain of the diocese, was abolished by the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss and divided between the Electorate of Salzburg and the Electorate of Bavaria , Thun left Passau in June 1803 in a dispute with the Bavarian Minister Montgelas and never returned .

He refused to acknowledge the changes that had occurred. Thun transferred the business powers to his vicar general Count Auersperg and the clerical council, the episcopal functions to his auxiliary bishop Karl Kajetan von Gaisruck . In 1804 he was exempted from his residence obligation. Since Vicar General Auersperg also left Passau in 1806, confused administrative relationships arose.

Leopold Leonhard Graf von Thun und Hohenstein lived on his property in Cibulka near Prague until his death , the clerical council took care of the business in the Diocese of Passau. In 1818 Auxiliary Bishop Gaisruck went to Milan as Archbishop, which meant that no more pontifical acts took place in Passau until 1824. In 1819 Thun offered the Holy See his resignation, but it was not accepted. After his death he was buried in Koschir near Prague.
