Light This City was a melodic death metal and thrash metal band from San Francisco , California that was formed in 2002 and split in 2008.
history
The band was formed in 2002 and consisted of guitarists Tyler Gamlen and Steven Shirley, bassist Mike Dias, drummer Ben Murray and singer Laura Nichol. After they had developed the first songs, the debut album The Hero Cycle was released in the fall of 2003 via Reflections of Ruin Records , with most of the members still in high school at the time . After the release, Brian Forbes and Steve Hoffman joined as new guitarists towards the end of the year. Hoffman replaces Nick Koenig, who was previously with the band for a short time. As a result, the group reached a contract with Prosthetic Records , about which Remains of the Gods appeared in 2005 . The contract was signed by the band members' parents as the average age of the members was only 20 years. After the release, Jon Frost joined the line-up as the new bass player and Ryan Hansen as the new guitarist. With this new line-up, several tours followed, with the band performing with groups like All Shall Perish , Suicide Silence and Too Pure to Die . In early 2006, the band also played at the New England Metal & Hardcore Festival and the Los Angeles Murderfest . In autumn 2006 the next album Facing the Thousand was released , whereupon Trevor Strnad from The Black Dahlia Murder could be heard as a guest singer. The release was followed by appearances in the USA at festivals, as well as together with bands like Vader , Malevolent Creation , Cattle Decapitation , Abigail Williams , Veil of Maya , Darkest Hour , Between the Buried and Me and Himsa . In addition, the band went on tour with Ion Dissonance , Nights Like These and As Blood Runs Black in December . In February 2007 the band shot their first music video for the song The Unwelcome Savior in Los Angeles under the direction of Darren Doane . The band then went on tour with All That Remains before going on a two-week tour in February and March with The Faceless and Antagonist . The last appearance of this tour took place at the California Metalfest in Santa Ana . In April the group went on tour with Horse the Band , The Number Twelve Looks Like You and So Many Dynamos , after which they played with All That Remains in May. Further appearances followed in the summer together with Vital Remains and With Passion . In early June 2008, the band canceled an upcoming tour with God Forbid , Soilent Green and Death Angel before announcing their split a few days later. The already finished next album was released in the USA at the end of November under the name Stormchaser , before it was also released in Europe at the end of January 2009 . The album was produced by Zach Ears . Chuck Billy ( Testament ) and John Strachan ( The Funeral Pyre ) could then be heard as guest musicians . In April 2010 the band held a few more isolated gigs.
style
According to laut.de , the band plays “rock-hard Thrash Metal”. Allmusic's Stewart Mason described the music as fast-paced thrash metal with death metal influences, the group being the only band with this style with a female singer. The band biography on the band's Facebook profile listed groups like At the Gates , Carcass , Megadeth and Testament as influences. In his review of Facing the Thousand , Anzo Sadoni stated that the band was comparable to The Black Dahlia Murder. The latter, however, relies more on aggressive Death Metal, whereas Light This City is more oriented towards bands like the old In Flames or Desultory . In their songs, the band mostly focuses on melody. Nichol's singing is said to be deep “ growls , sinister screams and Dani Filth- like nagging”. According to Florian Krapp from Metal Hammer , the band on Stormchaser plays a mixture of Bay Area Thrash Metal, melodic Death Metal and Hardcore Punk .
