With Passion was an American progressive death metal band from Sacramento , California that was formed in 2002 and split in 2007.

history

The band was formed in the summer of 2002 after several local groups broke up. The line-up initially consisted of singer and keyboard player Samuel McLeod, guitarists Shaun Gier and Jeff Morgan, drummer Jacob Peete and bassist Tim Davis. The latter, only intended as a placeholder, was replaced by Michael Nordeen in January 2003. The first appearances in northern California followed. In August 2003, Morgan left the cast, and Andrew Burt came on for him. In the same year a first demo appeared under the name The First Batallion: Battle Ensues . Brandon Guadagnolo joined as a keyboardist in April 2004. The EP In the Midst of Bloodied Soil was then released via Reflections of Ruins Records . Shortly thereafter, in October 2004, a recording contract was signed with Earache Records , about which the EP was re-released as a debut album in March 2005 with two bonus songs. With Justin from Jack's Smirking Reveng as drummer, US appearances with Immolation , Skinless , Misery Index and Deicide were made in May . In August, Burt and Guadagnolo said their goodbyes while drummer Peete returned to With Passion. In the summer all members left the band except for Gier and Nordeen. Around the same time, something similar happened with the band Conducting from the Grave , a side project of Gier and Morgan. The three remaining members then joined Gier and Nordeen, whereupon With Passion now consisted of bassist Nordeen and singer Gier, guitarists Jeff Morgan and John Abernathy and drummer Greg Donnelly. In October and November the band gave concerts with Cryptopsy , Cephalic Carnage , Aborted and Suffocation . At the beginning of January 2006 a tour through North America began together with Hypocrisy , Soilent Green , Raging Speedhorn , Decapitated and Nile . In September of that year, singer Gier had to stop for personal reasons. In October, with Fidel Campos as the new singer, the debut album What We See When We Shut Our Eyes was recorded in Mana Studio in Florida under the direction of Erik Rutan and released in February 2007. Guy Kozowyk from The Red Chord can be heard as a guest singer . In the summer there were US performances with Vital Remains and Light This City . In the same year, the bassist Nordeen left the last original member of the line-up and was replaced by Steven Lovas. In August of that year the band announced their breakup due to the poor promotion and distribution of the second album. The last gig was held on September 23rd in Roseville , California . Morgan, Abernaty, and Donnelly then revived Conducting from the Grave. In their career, the band also played with As I Lay Dying , Between the Buried and Me , Himsa , Misery Signals , The Red Chord, Scars of Tomorrow , Six Feet Under , Stretch Arm Strong and Terror, among others .

style

Marcus Schleutermann from Rock Hard wrote in his review of In the Midst of Bloodied Soil that the electric guitars show influences from Thrash Metal from the San Francisco Bay Area , which would particularly impress with "fine melody licks and brutal riffs". The group tries hard songwriting by using a lot of breaks in the songs , but they proceed arbitrarily and less skillfully, as a band like Meshuggah does . Drumming sounds technically adept, but due to the hectic rhythm changes and the exaggerated use of double bass, one misses comprehensible song structures. The keyboard is usually only audible during the intros and otherwise goes under. The shouts sound powerless and monotonous. What We See When We Shut Our Eyes was reviewed in a later edition : The challengingly played electric guitars, which are characterized by “ Malmsteen- like dexterity and Satriani- like string control”, are particularly characteristic. The vocals sound like the ones commonly used in hardcore punk , overall the music was assigned to death metal. In the same issue, the album was also reviewed by another reviewer: Here, too, the playful ability was emphasized, but the music sounds callous.

Ollie Fröhlich from Ox-Fanzine described the band in his review of In the Midst of Bloodied Soil as a group that offers "a pleasant mix of technically demanding and musical death [metal] that never loses its harshness even despite using the keyboard". The songwriting is complex and allows the "songs to fluctuate between pure blasts, crazy staccato parts and melancholic but uncomfortable periods of rest". The singing is powerful and pleasant.
