Conceptually, one must distinguish between prophets in the sense of books of prophets and individual persons who are referred to as prophets.
This list of biblical prophets includes
- Persons who are referred to in the Bible as prophets or seers, men of God, etc. called and commissioned by God : a respective passage from the Bible is given.
- People who are considered Nebi'im (prophets) in Judaism according to the Talmud , even if they are not expressly named as such in the Bible: These are marked in italics , the biblical passage where they were first mentioned is indicated.
- Books of the Tanakh called "prophets". The “front” (written) and “back” (scriptural) prophets in the Tanakh are listed in the order of their appearance according to the Jewish Bible canon .
- New Testament prophets are listed alphabetically.
- Biblical persons identified as “false prophets” are not listed.
