Ensemble Völklinger Hütte (pig iron production area) In 1881 Carl Röchling acquired a closed puddling and rolling mill and had the first blast furnace ignited two years later. As early as 1890, the "Röchling'schen Eisen- und Stahlwerke" were the largest iron girder manufacturer in Germany. In 1891 the Thomas steelworks of the Völklinger Hütte was opened to smelt Minette from Lorraine. When sintering technology arrived in 1928 , one of the most modern and largest sintering plants in Europe was built in Völklingen. It allows the recycling of waste products such as gout dust and fine ore. In 1952, as a result of the construction boom in the post-war period, the hut reached its production peak. In 1975, however, the global steel crisis also affected the Völklinger ironworks. After the pig iron phase was shut down in 1986, this part was placed under monument protection as an industrial monument and declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1994.
