Monument protection area old town Torgau (statute of March 18, 2015) (Map) The historic center of the old town includes the city center of Torgau mostly within the partially preserved city wall with castle or palace area, former Burgmannsiedlung and the historical quarters of bakers, fishermen, Leipzig and hospital quarters. Its border runs in the north, starting from the southeast side of Friedrichplatz, across Puschkinstraße, the north side of Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz, Unter den Linden, Gartenstraße and a piece of Elbstraße to Hartenfels Castle . From here, the eastern and southern boundaries of the area are formed by the Hartenfels, Elbmagazin, Salzspeicher and Fischerstraße 26 lines as well as the south side of the promenade. In the west, the border stretches along the western side of the Leipziger Wall up to Friedrichplatz. 09301824

Glacis is a term used in fortress construction and describes earth fills (ramparts) that lie in front of the ditch. The vacant and uncultivated area served to deny enemy troops cover. In 1893, renovation work began on the glacis of the Torgau fortress. From 1911 the glacis was redesigned as a garden promenade according to plans by Paul Lässig.

1811-1813 Part of the historical fortification of Torgau from the time of the Napoleonic Wars, important in terms of urban development, military history and architecture, as well as of unique value as one of the last of its kind in Germany, cell house of local and national significance.

Fort Zinna was built as part of the country's main fortress from 1811 to 1813 and, after being taken over by Prussia in 1815, was renewed and expanded over the years. It remained a fortress until 1889. After that, the facility served as a barracks until 1914. During the First World War, the military used Fort Zinna as a prisoner of war camp. During the Weimar Republic, it was converted into a prison and a penal institution, and a wing with a cross-shaped floor plan was built for it (probably 1922–1923). The powder magazine to the south was probably converted into an institution church after 1922. The striking building with its clinker facade that has been preserved is apparently not currently in use. In 1943 the former fortress became the site of the Imperial Court Martial, which was relocated to Torgau. After the end of the Second World War, it functioned as a Soviet internment camp.

Water tower (water tower, pump house and administration building) Am Wasserturm 1
(map)
1903 (water system) Water engineering system from 1903, also of particular architectural quality (especially the water tower, which is visible from afar and highlighted with colored bricks and ornaments).

To ensure a stable water supply, the city of Torgau commissioned civil engineer Pfeffer in 1903 with the construction of a water-technical ensemble consisting of a water tower, a pump house and an administration building. The 45 meter high water tower made of red clinker masonry stands out in its elaborate, historic design. Its circular tower shaft tapers off and is accentuated by tracery cornices above the base zone and in the transition to the cantilevered container storey. Narrow slotted windows framed with dark bricks and the crenellated bay windows on the eaves give the building a fortificatory character. Above the entrance, which is also decorated with battlements and the year 1903, a sandstone plaque with Torgau's city coat of arms is embedded on the tower shaft, which was created by the sculptor Conrad. The steel water tank of the Intze II type is designed for a capacity of 500m³, but has been out of service since the 1970s. The water tower and the associated pump house testify to the development of the urban water supply at the beginning of the 20th century. They are therefore of importance for the history of technology. Due to its architectural design, the water tower is also of architectural significance. LfD / 2017.

16./17. Century (rear parts) striking neo-Gothic building with a shop area and seating niche portal from the previous building, characterizing the street scene, of importance in terms of local development, architectural history and artistic importance.

The house at Bäckerstraße 3 is essentially a building from the 16th century, which received its current, outwardly formative neo-Gothic design from a renovation in 1871/72. From the originally two-storey house from the 16th century, the basement, the walls on the ground floor and the surrounding walls on the upper floor have largely been preserved, except for the completely newly built front. Inside, the wall-articulating relief arches show the characteristic forms of the time of origin. The rich seating niche portal, which was incorporated into the neo-Gothic facade design, is particularly informative for the dating and significance of the original building. Today it is considered the most magnificent and perhaps also the oldest secular building portal in Torgau. Its shape is late Gothic. The niches are covered by canopies from which the busts of a woman and a fool peek out. The canopy of the fool consists of keel arches intertwined with branches, that of the woman consists only of branches. Above the canopies, the reveal of a flat pointed arch is attached, which has a round rod accompanied by two valleys. The throats are adorned with angel heads. At the top of the arch there is a console also carried by an angel's head, on the side of which angels with banners float. The inscription on the banners "AVE MARIA / GRAC [IA] PLENA" suggests that there was once an image of Mary on the console. Relief approaches on the side of the canopies indicate that the portal decoration originally extended beyond the current framework. The seats on shell consoles are a little more recent than the arch design, which stylistically dates back to the first decade of the 16th century. According to the house book of Torgau (Lange, Karl-Heinz: Das Häuserbuch der Stadt Torgau , 2013), which traces the owners of the property back to 1491, councilor and mayor Valten Donath bought timber in 1523. When he died in 1528, he left behind large debts, which apparently also or in particular weighed on the property. The subsequent owner Clauß Lawerhaße took over the property with the debts. This news strongly suggests that Valten Donath rebuilt the house or at least carried out extensive renovations. Honorable citizens who were entrusted with municipal offices still appear among the house owners from the 16th to 18th centuries. In 1850, brewery owner Friedrich Wilhelm Thümmel bought the property and subsequently expanded it into a brewery with a restaurant. As a result, the extensive courtyard development consisted of ice cellars, malt and breweries. Except for a cellar barrel, nothing has survived. This is located on the south side of the courtyard and is accessible via the cellar of the front building. The barrel vault consists of natural stone masonry. With the renovation in 1871/72, which was carried out by the Torgau master mason Otto Wenck, the front building was increased to three floors. The newly created facade is asymmetrically divided into two sections. The northern one with ogival panels and attic looks like a template and takes up the late Gothic house portal on the ground floor. The southern section consequently recedes a bit and shows less jewelry. Overall, the neo-Gothic facade decoration, which consists of various friezes, services and bust medallions (bearded men with hoods), impresses with its balanced delicacy. The elaborate house entrance door and the door to the former dining room located in the house passage also come from the neo-Gothic renovation. In 1923, the owner Alfred Pohrer installed a shop instead of the dining room. The newly created shop opens onto the street with its shop window and entrance.

The house at Bäckerstraße 3 is part of the development of the historic town center of Torgau, which due to its dense building stock from the 15th to the 17th century is one of the most interesting and important urban areas in Saxony and beyond. In the numerous town houses in closed construction, forms of the late Gothic and Renaissance are particularly evident. With the late Gothic seat niche portal, a particularly noteworthy testimony to the type and quality of townhouse architecture in Torgau has been preserved. It illustrates the skill of stone carving at the time. The house also documents the local building development in the past through its core inventory, which has been handed down from the 16th century. Despite the reshaped condition, the building fabric allows conclusions to be drawn about the historical floor plan and construction forms, which are important informational values for house research. With the neo-Gothic renovation, the building also represents a younger chapter in local building development. It refers to how older buildings have been adapted to new usage requirements and style ideas. It is precisely here that it shows that idiosyncratic and tastefully coherent solutions were found. This also proves the professionalism of the master masons and building contractors at that time. The facade of the house at Bäckerstraße 3 is one of the most important and particularly striking examples of neo-Gothic architectural design for Torgau. Under the aspects described, the building acquires significance in terms of local development and building history. The late Gothic seat niche portal also represents a high artistic and art historical value. The maintenance of the property is therefore in the public interest in accordance with Section 2 of the SächsDSchG. LfD / 2015.

Very representative and conspicuously monumental neo-Gothic facade with a rich decoration of arched friezes, tracery fields (rich late Gothic sculpture), Torgau's oldest niche portal from the previous building on the ground floor.

Bürgermeister-Ringenhain-Haus (residential building with two back buildings in closed development) Breite Strasse 9
(map)
16th century Characteristic and particularly stately town house of the Renaissance, three-storey, with a high pitched roof and profiled window walls as well as unique house furnishings in the form of painted field ceilings from the 1st quarter and the end of the 16th century (so far one of the most artistically high quality examples in Torgau), urban or urban development - and historically significant building, from an artistic point of view of singular importance.

Behind the simple facade of a stately three-storey town house with a steep pitched roof, there are unique, high-quality ceiling and wall paintings and three-dimensional decorative elements from the late 16th and early 17th centuries. These make it the most important Renaissance town house in Central Germany in terms of art and cultural history. The design is thanks to the wealthy Torgau cloth merchant and mayor Paul Ringenhain (around 1570 to 1637), who had his house beautifully decorated based on the example of courtly living culture. The ceiling and wall paintings, which show Italian and Dutch influences, were created by trained artists, including the animal painter Pieter de Bruck. They reveal European dimensions. The "angel parlor" on the first floor with a sky of clouds, stars and angels making music shows design parallels to the no longer preserved angel parlors in Hartenfels Castle. The upper floors can be experienced in the spatial structures of the Renaissance, of which the second could only be partially restored, take you into the history of the house and impressively document culture and art at the turn of the 16th to the 17th century as a reflection of the demanding lifestyle of a rich Torgau citizen. 1811-1813 The exterior of the historical fortifications from the time of the Napoleonic Wars, barracks from the 19th century, an architecturally remarkable testimony from the Prussian garrison period, the complex and buildings are of military historical significance.

A hill (probably) laid out in 1632 at the bridgehead east of the Elbe and opposite Hartenfels Castle was expanded from 1811 to 1813 to form the outer works of a fortress (state main fortress). Its floor plan with bastions, closed ramparts and moats as well as various more recent buildings have largely been preserved. At the end of the 1850s, a moat weir (caponier, broken off) and a semicircular defensive barracks as a reduit were added on the throat side facing the Elbe. The defense barracks have not changed except for the lack of smaller superstructures. It was based on a design by the engineer and major from Schneider. The plans (presumably) in the Secret State Archive of Preussischer Kulturbesitz, Berlin-Dahlem are dated 1856 and countersigned, ie (presumably) confirmed, in the same year. Construction should therefore have started in 1857 at the latest. The wall in front of the Elbe and the barracks are made of Cyclops masonry. Inside the U-shaped building there are bulletproof interiors on the upper floor, mostly cannons. These are accessed via a corridor. All rooms are vaulted. The two surviving posterns in the north and south of the complex are dated 1812. The two hollow trusses date from 1879. The bridgehead remained a fortification until 1889. Then it served as a barracks until 1914. During the First World War, the military used the facility as a prisoner of war camp.

Stand weir: Bottom outlet or pond stand of the large pond, system made of wall with sandstone blocks, stairs, weir and railing Dahlener Strasse
(map)
1674 The large pond with its facilities is one of the oldest monuments in the history of production in the Saxon region (see Dahlener Strasse, Großer Teich), and is of technical importance.

The stand weir (or pond stand) at the large pond is built into an earth wall. Possibly this belonged temporarily to the so-called Teichschanze. The actual weir system, built from sandstone blocks, has a deep bottom outlet with a movable lock and a side, partially covered overflow. A massive, block-like structure rises above the bottom outlet, on which in turn the protective housing with the rotating spindle for the movable lock stands. On the back of the block-like structure (on the east side) there is an oval mirror with an angled cornice and the coat of arms of Electoral Saxony. The overflow, which is formed like a channel by means of an additional cheek, is spanned in the middle by an arch. The roofing on the pond side was added later. According to the available literature, the stand weir is said to have been built in 1674. The railing and the shelter are from the 19th century.

Monument to the encounter Elbstrasse
(map)
1946 Flag monument in sandstone at the meeting place of Soviet and American troops on April 25, 1945 ( Elbe Day ) at the Elbe Bridge, of particular historical importance and special memorial value.

The memorial of the encounter in Torgau primarily commemorates the end of the Second World War, which started on German soil, and the millions of deaths it caused, including among the peoples of the Soviet Union. In addition, it refers to the struggle of the Allies against Hitler Germany. The focus is on the encounter between Soviet and American troop units in 1945 on the Elbe near Torgau. The monument, which was erected only a year later, looks like a Soviet memorial, as it was erected by the Soviet Army itself or at their instigation. Nevertheless, passages of text and some of the banners on the stele also refer to the participation of the Americans. The lavishly designed, free-standing monument consisting of a base, stele and top with trophy decorations is a reminder of an important event in world history. Thus, the monument quality and the public interest in conservation result from its international importance. Salzhof: administrator's house and salt storage Fishing village 10
(map)
re. 1766 striking baroque buildings of architectural and artistic value, also of importance for the local history and the economic history (monument of trade and warehouse management).

The buildings of the former Salzhof are significant monuments of the development of trade and warehouse management in the former market town of Torgau. Starting more than 450 years ago, salt was stored and traded in Torgau for over 300 years. The remaining buildings of the Salzhof testify to this. In the Middle Ages, Torgau was located on the Salzstrasse , an important west-east trade route through which the Hallesche Salz was brought to Torgau through Salzer and stored here. The salt was transported from Magdeburg by Elbe ships. As a market town in the salt trade, Torgau took a prominent position. As early as 1432, the Saxon princes initially enfeoffed private individuals, from 1433 the city council with the salt and wine tariffs (both were linked). He set up a salt chamber for salt storage. Torgau received the salt market exemption and the miles privilege in 1460. The salt deposit was originally near the Elbe in front of the castle gate. In 1636, the Salt Office was set up in Torgau and a salt administrator (Salzvogt) was appointed. From here, salt was resold in smaller quantities (analogous to wholesale). During the siege of Torgau by the Swedes in the Thirty Years' War, the house of the salt administrator was destroyed in 1637 and the salt depot was devastated. In 1666 the Salzhof was rebuilt with salt sheds on the site of today's former Salzhof. In 1759, during the Seven Years' War, these buildings were burned down by Austrian artillery. In 1766 the still existing large salt store and the house of the salt administrator were rebuilt on the remains of the old building. Another large salt storage facility was built in 1781. The year of construction of a third salt storage facility is not clearly recorded. In 1802 the city council sold its salt privilege to the Elector of Saxony.

(map)
1896 Located in the station area, high-quality design, with a different-colored clinker brick facade, blind arch structure and timber-framed top, functional building with architectural and historical significance, important for the townscape, and also important as a technical monument.

The water tower built in 1896 originally supplied the steam locomotives in Torgau station with service water. Since its renovation in 2007, it has been used as an office building. It is an octagonal, red brick building with a natural stone base and tent roof. The facade is structured by cross-storey reserves, which are illuminated by high segmental arched windows on the ground floor and small segmental arched twin windows on the upper floor. A diamond-shaped pattern made of dark clinker bricks decorates the zone between the first and second floors. The tower head protrudes slightly over a clinker cornice, it is constructed as a half-timbered frame with brick infill, in each of the eight segments there is a large window in the middle. This part of the altogether approx. 18 meter high tower originally contained the steel loft tank (capacity 100 m³) for the water supply, the curved bottom part of which is still preserved. As further evidence of its original function, the water level indicator on the tank floor has been preserved. The water tower is structurally identical to the water tower west of the Eilenburg train station located to the southwest along the route on the Halle – Cottbus line opened in 1871/72. It thus bears witness to the rationalization in railway construction at the end of the 19th century and is of importance both in terms of railway history and technology history. In addition, the architecturally well-proportioned functional building characterizes the cityscape of Torgau. LfD / 2017.

around 1820 of importance in terms of industrial and local history.

Text by the former honorary monument conservator Mr. Zabel (until around 1990): “... The lime kiln was built around 1820 by a citizen of Torgau, Barth. Because of the risk of fire and certainly also because of the favorable transport conditions, the lime kiln was built outside of the city, about 500 m from the fortress wall, in front of the fishing village near the lunette Loßwig. The activities of the lime burners were first reported in 1824. Limestone and coal were transported in with Elbe barges and unloaded immediately in front of the lime kiln above the current port entrance ... The lime kiln, also called lime kiln, was a shaft kiln (chamber kiln) that was loaded manually (with wheelbarrows). It was mentioned in 1838 as a Sickert lime kiln and in 1858 in the “Fire Regulations of the City of Torgau”. The burned slaked lime was sold as construction and white lime directly at the lime kiln. At the turn of the century, the lime kiln ceased operations and gradually fell into disrepair. After the "Hafenschlößchen" was built, the remains were used as a viewing platform for the guests ".

1898-1901 Architecturally and militarily historically significant evidence from the Prussian garrison period (architecturally significant Prussian military buildings).

The water tower is part of the former barracks of the XII, who was stationed in Torgau from 1901. Hussar Regiment. It was built between 1898 and 1901 according to designs by the engineers and architects Reimer, Trautmann and Amschler employed by the Royal War Ministry and supplied the barracks with water. Architecturally sophisticated, the cylindrical, slightly conical tower shaft of the 25m high clinker building rises above a square base. Triangular gables and lying triangular surfaces mediate between the designs. The tower shaft is structured with four narrow sandstone bands and staggered slotted windows. Sandstone consoles and a stepped cornice lead over to the cantilevered octagonal container storey, which is shaped by the small-scale change of material between red bricks and light sandstone and is closed off by a flat dome. In the center of the tower, a narrow iron spiral staircase, on the sides of which the pipes run, leads to the water tank. As an important supply building for the barracks complex, the water tower is an important testimony to Prussian military architecture. It is of high architectural value and, in this regard, of architectural historical importance. LfD / 2017.

1897 Significant historical testimony to the first systematic and scientifically based water level measurement, of technical historical value, rarity value, important for local history and appearance (view of the port).

Monuments to the history of production and transport . Part 1. Berlin 1989, pp. 147–148: “The gauge is an important historical witness of the first systematic and scientifically based water level measurements. The structure of the water level house has a valuable industrial architecture and is a rarity. As early as 1893, a wooden gauge house was built on the Elbe near Torgau, in the immediate vicinity of the inland port, which was replaced in 1897 by a solid and elegant gauge house. The original technical equipment was destroyed during the Second World War and had to be replaced by a new and more modern one. The level system consists of the so-called multi-part staff level and the writing level. The bar level is on the left bank of the Elbe, beach kilometer 154.63 on the first pillar of the Elbstrasse bridge, and consists of three tiers ... The level is used to determine the water levels for shipping and maintenance of the river on a daily basis. He is also involved in the flood reporting service. At km 154.8 there is a measuring point for flow measurements that are related to this level. The writing level is on the northern bank of the port ... at km 154.15. It is installed in a massive house made of brickwork. The lower part of the water level room has a circular, well-like floor plan with a diameter of 1.25 m. The wall thickness is 0.38 m. The well reaches above HHW (previous highest water level) and carries the hexagonal water level house on brackets and a solid ceiling ... It has a tent roof that was originally covered with roof tiles ... “.

(map)
1898-1901 Architecturally and militarily historically significant evidence from the Prussian garrison period (architecturally significant Prussian military buildings).

The water tower is part of the former barracks of the XII, who was stationed in Torgau from 1901. Hussar Regiment. It was built between 1898 and 1901 according to designs by the engineers and architects Reimer, Trautmann and Amschler employed by the Royal War Ministry and supplied the barracks with water. Architecturally sophisticated, the cylindrical, slightly conical tower shaft of the 25 m high clinker building rises above a square base. LfD / 2017.
