The following list sorts countries according to the average cigarette consumption per year per person over 15 years within a country. It also shows what proportion of the female and male population in each country regularly smokes cigarettes . If the average per capita cigarette consumption is very high, although the proportion of smokers is relatively low, this indicates a high smoking intensity among the smoking population. According to the Tabacco Atlas , a total of 5.8 trillion cigarettes were smoked worldwide in 2014 . The country with the highest cigarette consumption in the world was the People's Republic of China , which was responsible for almost half of the world's consumption. In total, over 1.7 billion people worldwide smoked regularly, which was 20% of the world's population. Smoking is particularly widespread in middle- and upper-income countries and there especially among men.

In most developed countries, cigarette consumption has decreased in recent years, while it has continued to increase in developing and emerging countries. 2016 was the first year that the total number of cigarettes smoked worldwide fell.
