background
Wolf Biermann, who moved from Hamburg to the German Democratic Republic at the age of sixteen in 1953 , has been publishing songs and poems since 1960. Biermann made his first guest appearance in the Federal Republic of Germany in 1964. In April 1965 he appeared with his songs in a cabaret program by Wolfgang Neuss in Frankfurt am Main , which was recorded as an LP in 1965 under the title Wolf Biermann (Ost) Wolfgang Neuss (West) appeared on Philips Records . It was Biermann's first record release. In the same year Biermann published the volume of poetry Die Drahtharfe in West Berlin publishing house Klaus Wagenbach .
In December 1965, the 11th plenum of the Central Committee of the SED imposed a total ban on appearing and publishing in the GDR. After Biermann had for years refrained from making records in the Federal Republic of Germany in an effort not to make it impossible to publish his songs on the GDR record label Amiga , four of his songs appeared in 1968 under the title Four New Songs and his in 1969 first own long-playing record at Chausseestrasse 131 at Wagenbach's quarterback. This was followed by the records Don't wait for better times (1973), Aah-Ja! (1974), Love Songs (1975), and There's a Life Before Death (1976), all released on CBS Records . In 1976 Wolf Biermann was refused entry to the GDR after a concert tour in the Federal Republic of Germany and he was expatriated . Biermann's expatriation triggered widespread protests in East and West Germany.
In the Federal Republic of Germany Biermann wrote numerous new songs, took part in the peace movement , campaigned against the planning of the facilities for the storage of nuclear waste in Gorleben, gave numerous concerts and published with Der Friedensclown - Lieder für Menschenkinder (1977), Das geht sein 'Socialist Gang (1977), Despite All That! (1990) numerous records and CDs at the record labels CBS Records, Musikant and Electrola .
On October 24, 1989, Wolf Biermann promised civil rights activist Bärbel Bohley, at her invitation, to appear at the demonstration on Berlin's Alexanderplatz on November 4 ; However, the GDR authorities refused him entry. It was not until December 1, 1989 that Biermann was allowed to return to the GDR for a concert in the Leipzig exhibition halls . The concert was broadcast live for the first time on both West German and GDR television .
