Around 1880, a memorial for the fallen and wounded in the Franco-German War of 1870/71 was erected on the square , which the sculptor Hans C. Kirchhoff had created. The aforementioned war memorial, which stands at the intersection of the cross-shaped network of paths in the gardens, consists of an obelisk made of red granite with an eagle on top. The memorial inscriptions are in the lower area. The playground to the east has existed since 1913/14. In 1939, the area was named after Christian Friedrich Voigt (* 1864, † 1938), the local researcher and principal of the St. Marien Boys' School I.
