List of installation vessels

The Sea Energy in the construction of wind turbines for the offshore wind farm Scroby Sands

This list of installation vessels includes installation vessels of various types and uses.

background

A construction ship , also known as an installation ship , is a ship that is specially built and equipped for the erection of structures in or on water . Such ships are often used for the construction of offshore structures in the sea. Ships for the construction of offshore wind turbines have been of particular importance in recent times, around the turn of the millennium .

Installation ships usually have a spacious deck area for the transport and preparation of the components. A powerful ship crane is usually used for the actual erection ; Installation ships are almost always crane ships or floating cranes. However, the crane is usually not used floating, but installation ships are usually designed as lifting ships for a safe stand up to a water depth of a few tens of meters , so they can stand on the seabed using extendable jack-up legs. But there are also construction vessels without lifting legs in semi-submersible , SWATH , catamaran or classic monohull designs. Such ships are not limited in the water depth by the length of the legs, but the crane is not as strong and precise.
