List of military libraries

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a list of military libraries . The following overview of the military libraries also lists historical or former libraries and those whose holdings are now in those of other libraries. The list focuses on libraries in the German-speaking area. It is thematically broad and does not claim to be up-to-date or complete.

The historian Thomas Fuchs stated that military libraries were important supporting institutions for social developments before the middle of the 20th century:

“The military librarianship owed its emergence in the second half of the 18th century to the educational impulse of the Enlightenment, both with regard to officers who were educated in humanity and to officers who were trained in weapons technology and tactics. The military libraries were important carriers of the new military science paradigm; as a social place they also played an outstanding role in the educational efforts of the officers. "
