The Scarlets ( called Llanelli Scarlets until 2008 ) are a professional rugby union team from the Welsh town of Llanelli, established in 2003 . You play in the international Pro14 championship and in the Anglo-Welsh Cup, the Anglo-Welsh Cup . The home games are played in Parc y Scarlets .
history
Until the 2003/04 season, Welsh rugby was structured in a typical league pyramid, with nine professional clubs in the top division. The system was thus similar to the Guinness Premiership in England and the Top 14 in France. However, the Welsh market turned out to be too small for nine professional teams. Then the nine professional clubs began to combine to form regional teams. In the Llanelli region, these were the Llanelli RFC , the Carmarthen RFC , the Llandovery RFC and the Narberth RFC . The amateur and junior teams of these clubs continue to operate under their original names.
The first season of the Llanelli Scarlets, whose squad consisted mainly of players from the Llanelli RFC, was extremely successful. They reached the quarter-finals of the European Heineken Cup and won the championship title in the Celtic League . In 2005, the Scarlets did not qualify for the Heineken Cup, but advanced to the final in the EDF Energy Cup , where Welsh teams were allowed for the first time, where they were subject to the London Wasps . In the 2006/07 Heineken Cup, the Scarlets won all group stage games, but then lost to the Leicester Tigers in the semi-finals . In the 2012/13 season they advanced to the semi-finals of the Pro12, where they were defeated by Ulster . In 2017 the Scarlets won the league title, in 2018 they lost in the final against Leinster .
Regional division
Professional rugby in Wales is based on four franchises owned by the Welsh Rugby Union and covering a specific area. The Llanelli Scarlets franchise covers the entire west and north of Wales. The Llanelli Scarlets are allowed to include all players who play for clubs in this area in their squad.
Stadion
Most of the Scarlets' home games are played at Parc y Scarlets in Llanelli , the home of the Llanelli RFC. Several times a year, however, some home games are held at the Racecourse Ground in Wrexham to better represent the north of Wales. Until 2008, the team played at Stradey Park .
