content
Lockdown is an R&B and rap song with a funky groove , the instrumentation takes a back seat in favor of the lyrics. As the title suggests, the lyrics refer to the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States, among other things . Anderson .Paak processed even more with Lockdown his experiences as a participant in the protests following the death of George Floyd in Los Angeles in early June 2020 . Important motives are police violence and racism both as a trigger and as a result of the mass demonstrations. The police use tear gas and rubber bullets , for example, as well as undercover police smuggled among the people , as occurred in 2016 as part of Black Lives Matter protests.

George Floyd , who was suffocated by a police officer on May 25, 2020 , is not named in the text, but is mentioned with the line “Sicker than the COVID how they did him on the ground”. Paak also makes comparisons with the end of slavery and the Rodney King Riots in Los Angeles in 1992 . The video version of the song includes an additional verse by Jay Rock , a remix released in August also includes verses from JID and Noname .
The cover picture shows Anderson .Paak with mouth and nose protection , in his hands a sign that reads “The People are rising” and the phrase “Who said it was a lockdown?” (Who said it would there be a lockdown?) In addition, 39 black fatalities from police violence are listed with the note Rest in power (see below).
Music video
A music video was staged by Dave Meyers , who recently worked extensively with Kendrick Lamar . Ann Powers of the NPR attested both the video and the song a " cathartic intimacy" and drew comparisons with Agnès Varda's feature film Vogelfrei . While Paak raps in a calm tone, the video shows what goes on beyond the news and iconic images, in the words of Powers the "downtime of the uprising": people plagued by self-doubt, each other embrace and mourn the losses that took them to the streets during the protests. Close-ups in various visual varieties are used as a special stylistic device . In addition to works by Agnès Varda and Barry Jenkins, Meyers references classical music videos such as Sinéad O'Connor's Nothing Compares 2 U or D'Angelos Untitled .
The video begins with Anderson .Paak and a motley group of friends laughing and lively entertaining each other at a lunch bar typical of the southern states - a frequent location for sit-ins in the 1960s . After a cut, the camera shows the protagonist's face, who is looking down and looking exhausted, a laceration on the forehead symbolizes his trauma . Another close-up shows Jay Rock rapping against a certain fatalism while talking to a younger colleague . The camera angle is reminiscent of the key scene in Moonlight , in which drug dealer Juan shares his wisdom with the boy Little. Arriving home, Paak sits down at the piano before son Soul Rasheed comes down the stairs and puts his hands in his father's palms. In the last scene, the two of them sit together on the couch. A tear runs down the rapper's face, which turns into an animation . Starting with George Floyd, the 39 victim names also listed on the single cover pop up one after the other and form a raised fist :
