Rudolf Gottfried Wilhelm Louis Karl Ernst Freiherr von Falkenstein (born June 27, 1811 in Lüskow , † November 14, 1888 in Wiesbaden ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

Origin and family

Louis was a member of the Western Pomeranian line of the Saxon barons of Falkenstein . His parents were the Prussian lieutenant colonel and heir to Lüskow and Butzow Friedrich Freiherr von Falkenstein (1770–1829) and Dorothea Ulrike Elisabeth, née von Quistorp (1785–1853). His marriage to Karoline Alexandrine Marie Friederike Schroeder (1811–1896), daughter of the Mecklenburg-Strelitz court secretary and councilor Heinrich Adolf Friedrich Schroeder, resulted in a daughter and three sons.

Career

Falkenstein joined the 2nd Company of the Guards Rifle Battalion in 1828 and in 1829 was promoted first to Portepeefähnrich , then to Second Lieutenant . From 1837 to 1842 he was assigned to the Guards NCO company and in 1842 became adjutant in the Guards Rifle Battalion. He rose to prime lieutenant in 1846 and captain and company commander in 1849 . With his promotion to major , he became commander of the 1st Jäger Battalion. In 1861 he became battalion commander in Grenadier Regiment No. 5 and was promoted to lieutenant colonel in the same year. In 1863 he was entrusted with the command of the Grenadier Regiment No. 10 , rose to colonel and became the regiment's commander. With his regiment he was also in 1863 to guard the border of the v. Army corps commanded between Kalisch and Kempten. Falkenstein took part in the German-Danish War , in particular the battles near Horsens and Aarhus , and received the Order of the Red Eagle III. Class with a bow. In the German War he took part in the battle at Zuckmantel and the Battle of Königgrätz and received the swords for the Order of the Red Eagle III. Class with a bow. In 1866 he became the commander of the 2nd Infantry Brigade and was promoted to a patented major general . In 1869 he was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd Class, with Oak Leaves and Swords on the Ring. In the Franco-Prussian War he fought in the battles at Colombey , Noisseville ( Iron Cross 2nd class), at the Hallue , at Armiens (Iron Cross 1st class) and the siege of Metz . In 1871 he was sent to the Generalgouvernement of Lorraine to be used as a troop leader and in the same year he was made an officer of the army. Also in 1871 Falkenstein was given the character of Lieutenant General and was put up for disposal in 1872 with a pension . He was a knight of the Order of St. John .
