Ludwig Wilhelm August Dürr (born May 6, 1822 in Durlach , † June 22, 1891 in Karlsruhe ) was a Prussian major general .

Life

Ludwig was the son of Engelhard Dürr († 1866) and his wife Christiane, née Wagner († 1828), who would later be the auditor at the water and road construction department in Karlsruhe.

Military career

After visiting the Lyceum and Polytechnic in Karlsruhe, Dürr joined the body infantry regiment of the Baden Army as a musketeer on April 1, 1839 . There he was promoted to lieutenant at the end of May 1841 and from December 5, 1841 served as a battalion adjutant. On January 22, 1842, Dürr was ordered to build the Rastatt fortress and in 1844 he was assigned to the engineering section of the Quartermaster General. In this position he became first lieutenant at the end of April 1845 and in the spring of 1848 when the VIII Federal Corps was set up he was assigned to the General Staff of the 2nd Division. Dürr took on the staff of General von Gagern the Battle on the Scheideck part. On August 6, 1848, he was assigned to the General Staff of the Field Troop Corps for the campaign in Schleswig and Holstein . Due to the ceasefire in Malmö shortly thereafter , Dürr had no opportunity to take part in combat operations. He then returned to Karlsruhe and worked as a teacher at the local war school . In October 1851 he was assigned to Rastatt as an engineer officer, rose to captain a year later and from December 1853 served as first adjutant to governor Gayling von Altheim for two years . He was then appointed commander of the Cadet Corps . During the mobilization on the occasion of the Sardinian War , Dürr was assigned to the General Staff of the Field Division and entrusted with the management of the Office of the Internal Service. After he was promoted to major on June 9, 1860 , Grand Duke Friedrich I appointed him his wing adjutant at the end of the month . In mid-May 1865 Dürr returned to service as a battalion commander in the 3rd Infantry Regiment . During the German War he was promoted to lieutenant colonel in 1866 and appointed engineer vom Platz after the Austrian and Prussian troops had withdrawn from the Rastatt fortress. Promoted to colonel in this position on March 10, 1868 , Dürr had the task of quickly putting the federal fortress in a state of defense when the war against France broke out in 1870 .

Grand Duke Friedrich I honored him in 1871 by awarding him the Commander's Cross, 2nd class, of the Order of the Zähringer Lion, and Emperor Wilhelm I , awarding him the Order of the Crown, 2nd class. With a patent dated July 26, 1870, Dürr was taken over on July 15, 1871 as a colonel , leaving his position as engineer officer from the place in Rastatt in the network of the Prussian Army and aggregated to the staff of the engineer corps . On August 15, 1871, he was commissioned with the conduct of business as inspector of the 3rd fortress inspection, and on June 1, 1872, he was appointed inspector of this inspection in Poznan . On May 2, 1874, Dürr received the character of Major General and on the occasion of the festival on January 17, 1875 he was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle III. Class with a bow. Due to his health condition, he was on 11 March 1875, the statutory pension for disposition made.

After his departure , Dürr worked from October 1880 to the end of 1884 as 2nd President of the Baden Military Association.

Dürr was initially married to Franziska König, who died on June 22, 1862 in Karlsruhe. From this marriage two sons were born. Ludwig (1852–1934) became a German judge , Karl (1854–1919) advanced to infantry general and was adjutant general of Grand Duke Friedrich II of Baden for many years . In his second marriage, Dürr married Sophie Freiin Schilling von Cannstatt (1838–1895) on March 31, 1864 in Karlsruhe .
