Ludwig Kelbetz (born June 18, 1905 in Graz , Styria , Austria-Hungary , † January 10, 1943 near Stalingrad , Soviet Union ) was an Austrian music educator, philologist, sports teacher and author. He is considered the father of the Styrian music school system, especially since the didactic methodology and organizational forms of today's music schools can still be traced back to him despite his clear Nazi reference.

School and study

Ludwig Kelbetz attended the Bundesrealschule II in his hometown . From 1925 he studied German language and literature and physical exercises at the Karl-Franzens University in Graz as well as music ( flute , piano , organ ) at the Conservatory of the Musikverein for Styria . He was also a youth leader in the Association of New Scouts (BNP) in Graz, and between 1927 and 1929 youth leader of the German Freischar - Association of Wandering Birds and Pathfinders (DF). In 1929 he completed his studies with a doctorate to become Dr. phil. from.

Professional development

Immediately after graduating, Kelbetz went to Germany in 1929, where he worked as an assistant, course leader and lecturer at the Musikheim in Frankfurt an der Oder under Georg Götsch until 1930 . Between 1930 and 1934 he worked as a music advisor for the German National Handicrafts Association in Hamburg.

In 1932/33 he switched to the German University of Physical Education in Berlin-Charlottenburg as a lecturer for music and movement . In 1933 he was the last Federal Chancellor of the German Freischar and was music advisor to the German Employees' Association of the German Labor Front (DAF), Berlin. From June 1933, after the NSDAP was banned in Austria , Kelbetz held camouflaged NS singing and training meetings in all parts of Styria.

Between 1934 and 1936 he was a lecturer in physical education and music education at the teacher training college in Gdansk - Langfuhr . Then Kelbetz , who joined the NSDAP in 1936, was music advisor to the Hitler Youth (HJ), which was still illegal in Austria at the time, and worked as a lecturer and head of the music and movement department at the Graz Conservatory until 1938 . After the occupation of Austria, the so-called “ Anschluss ” to the German Reich in March 1938, he became its acting director.

In addition, he acted in 1938/39, succeeding Hermann Ritter von Schmeidel (1894–1953) as acting head of the Musikverein for Styria , was a music advisor in the HJ regional staff Styria and gau music editor Styria of the German People's Education Association in the DAF. Between 1939 and 1943 he was deputy director and chairman of the seminar for teachers at the music schools for youth and people and for private music teachers .

At the State College for Music Education Graz-Eggenberg , founded by him, Hanns (Johann Baptist Emil Othmar) Holenia (1890–1972), Josef Friedrich Papesch (1893–1968) and Konrad Stekl (1901–1979) , he became a personnel officer and leader of the National Socialist German Lecturer Association (NSD-Dozentbund), also head of the Styrian music schools for youth and people and music representative of the Hitler Youth for the area and Obergau Austria. On behalf of the Reichsmusikkammer (RMK), student body for music education , he led training camps for music teachers.

At the age of 37, Kelbetz fell as a sergeant, applicant for war officer (KOB) and member of Army Group Don under General Field Marshal Erich von Manstein near Stalingrad.
