Wilhelm Ludwig von Puttkamer (born December 15, 1739 in Lillo , † February 8, 1820 in Bartlin ) was a Prussian major general and knight of the order Pour le Mérite .

Life

Wilhelm Ludwig was a member of the Puttkamer noble family from Pomerania . He was a son of the Dutch lieutenant colonel Leopold Wilhelm von Puttkamer (1703–1747) and Elisabeth van Ketelaer (1716–1760).

Career

Like his father, Puttkamer was initially in Dutch service in 1756, then began his career in the Prussian army on February 22, 1761 as a second lieutenant in the artillery . In the Seven Years' War he took part in the battle near Reichenbach and the siege of the Schweidnitz fortress . On October 20, 1777 he was promoted to staff captain and then moved out into the War of the Bavarian Succession . He became captain on September 3, 1783 . In 1787 he took part in the Holland campaign and from 1792 to 1795 in the First Coalition , where he excelled in the cannonade of Valmy and even more in the siege of Mainz . For this, Puttkamer received the order Pour le Mérite in recognition of his performance in front of Mainz on June 23, 1793. Before that, he had been promoted to major in the 2nd artillery regiment on January 8, 1793, and subsequently, on April 11, 1795, to lieutenant colonel and commander of the 3rd artillery regiment. Puttkamer became colonel and chief of the Garrison Artillery of Cosel on June 14th, 1800 with a patent from April 11th of that year , participated in the successful defense of the garrison and, although forced to surrender as a commander, was able to surrender the fortress until the peace of Tilsit prevent, whereby this remained with Prussia. He was eventually promoted on July 21, 1807 Major General and received his farewell on 18 February 1809 800 taler board .

In 1774 Puttkamer acquired the Barnow and Alt Kolziglow estates from his brother, who was in financial distress, in order to support him, but in 1781 sold them to his cousin Jacob Gottlieb von Puttkamer, as did Neu Kolziglow , which he inherited from his brother in 1778, in 1783.

Wilhelm Ludwig entered the state of marriage twice. In 1780 he married his brother's widow, Sophie Elisabeth von Kameke († 1780). Then in 1798 he married Helene Charlotte Ernestine von Zitzewitz (1768-1815). His first wife gave birth to a daughter Luise Juliane Antoniette (1780-1807), his son from his second marriage, Julius (* / † 1802) lived only one day.
