Career

Started his career in Cleveland and St. Louis

Luis Soffner was born on January 15, 1990 to Julie and Rodney Soffner in the city of St. Louis in the US state of Missouri. He grew up alongside his brother Charlie and sister Maria in Cleveland , Ohio , and St. Louis. In 1999 he started his club career at the internationals soccer club in Cleveland. He was active there until 2005 and won state titles for the respective age group with his respective teams from 2001 to 2005 every year. He also played on the school soccer team at Saint Ignatius High School in Cleveland from 2004 to 2005 . With the St. Ignatius Wildcats , the name of the school's own sports department, he won the Ohio State Championships and the NSCAA High School National Title in his sophomore season, the 2005 game year .

After the family moved back to St. Louis, Soffner appeared at club level for the Scott-Gallagher Soccer Club . His grandfather Jim Scott was one of the founders of this club, which merged in 2007 with the two training clubs St. Louis / Busch Soccer Club and Metro United Soccer Club to form the St. Louis Scott Gallagher Soccer Club (SLSG). With his team he won the Missouri State Championships in 2006 and 2007. In parallel, he also played for the school soccer team at St. Louis University High School , where he completed his junior and senior years after moving. In his senior year, he brought it to 18 shutouts in 23 championship appearances and made it to the final for the Missouri state championship with the Junior Billikens , where the team was defeated. For his achievements, Soffner was elected to the St. Louis All-Metro-First-Team , as well as the All-State-Team . Soffner was also able to draw attention to himself at the school level and graduated every four years with first (class) honors .

Transfer to Indiana University Bloomington

After graduating from high school, Soffner began studying at Indiana University Bloomington in Bloomington , Indiana . There he met players from St. Louis, Tommy Meyer and Chris Haffner, who both attended St. Louis University High School with him and played with him at the Scott-Gallagher Soccer Club . In secondary education , he chose mathematics and was part of the men's soccer team at the Indiana Hoosiers university sports department while studying . He started his first academic year in 2008 with a red shirt season and only started playing for the Hoosiers in the following 2009 game year. This year he had a total of nine shutouts, 1,861.14 minutes played and a Goals Against Average (GAA) of 1.02. There were a total of 76 shots on his goal this year and he was voted into the Academic All Big Ten selection at the end of the year . With the team still being trained by Mike Freitag at that time , he made it to the regional semifinals of the Regional 2 group of the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship 2009 after winning the first and second round, where he lost 1-0 to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill .

In the following game year 2010, Soffner started under the new coach Todd Yeagley in 18 championship games in the goal of the Hoosiers, with 72 shots being fired at his goal. In addition to the one-time election as Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week , he was also elected to the All Tournament Team and Goalkeeping MVP this year . With 1,631.53 minutes played and a GAA of 1.27, he made it to the NSCAA Scholar All Region First Team , and for the second time in the Academic All Big Ten selection. With the team he came back to the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship ; In the 2010 game year , after a clear 5: 1 win over the University of Tulsa in the second round, in the regional semifinals of the Regional 3 group, the team was defeated just 1: 2 to the eventual winner of the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship, the University of Akron . In addition to being voted twice as the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week , Soffner achieved a GAA of 0.82 in 1,982.50 minutes with a total of eight shutouts in the 2011 game. For the third year in a row he made it into the Academic All Big Ten selection and with the team in the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship. In this game year , the team retired early from the tournament after a clear second round win. In the third round of Regional 1 there was only a defeat in overtime against the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The 2012 game year Soffner not only played as team captain , but also completed his most successful championship year at Indiana University Bloomington. In addition to being voted Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week three times , he was named for the fourth year in a row in the Academic All Big Ten selection and for the first time with the Big Ten Medal of Honor excellent. After returning to the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship, he and the team made it past the third round in the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship 2012 . After a second round win over Xavier University and two narrow wins over Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the third and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the quarterfinals of Regional 1 , the Indiana Hoosiers moved into the National Semfinals of the College Cup , the playoff for the Championship in college soccer , one. After a 1-0 win over Creighton University , the team found themselves in the final against Georgetown University , which only qualified for the final on penalties in the semifinals. It was mainly thanks to the offensive player Nikita Kotlov , but also the strong defensive around goalkeeper Luis Soffner that Indiana University Bloomington won the College Cup on December 9, 2012. For the university it was already the eight championship titles in men's football since the start of the football program in 1973. Soffner, who had achieved twelve shutouts over the entire game year, was not only elected to the all-tournament team , but also received the honor as a College Cup Most Outstanding Defensive Player . With 262 saves, he ranks behind Juergen Sommer (271; 1987–1990), Scott Coufal (274; 1993–1996) and Cary Feld , who was later known as a rabbi under the name of Chanan Feld, (275; 1974–1977) on the fourth place in the university's ranking (as of February 2018). Over his entire career at Indiana University Bloomington, he brought it to 47 wins in 84 championship appearances and 7,722.05 minutes of action. In all years of service at the university, Soffner was a letterman .

Jump into the MLS and switch to the private sector

On January 17, 2013, Soffner was drafted in the second round of the MLS SuperDraft 2013 to the Major League Soccer franchise New England Revolution ; alongside Eriq Zavaleta , who came tenth in the first round to Seattle Sounders FC , he was one of two Indiana University Bloomington players who made it into the MLS this year via the MLS SuperDraft . A few days later, Caleb Konstanski, a third Indiana player, made his way into the MLS via the MLS Supplemental Draft 2013 , but failed because of a professional career and then largely withdrew from football. In the New England Revolution, Soffner met two other former Indiana players: Kevin Alston and Lee Nguyen . Subsequently, he ranked behind Bobby Shuttleworth and Matt Reis only as the third goalkeeper in the squad and sat in just three games of Major League Soccer 2013 and in two games of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup 2013 unused on the bench. While the team made it into the season-closing play-offs in the league and was defeated there in the conference semifinals against Sporting Kansas City , the cup took place in the quarter-finals against DC United . That year he also got engaged to his longtime partner and former college colleague Kate Montgomery and survived the attack on the Boston Marathon a few months earlier when he was about 200 yards from the second detonated device.

After he had not played a competitive game for the Revolution in 2013, Soffner and his teammate Alec Sundly were awarded to USL pro partner Rochester Rhinos for the 2014 game year . Before that, a contract termination was already in the room. In the Rhinos, the 24-year-old made his professional debut on April 5, 2014 in a 3-1 loss to reigning champions Orlando City . Then coach Bob Lilley used him in another nine championship games as a regular, before Soffner returned to New England Revolution after completing his loan period, but was dismissed shortly afterwards. During his time as a professional soccer player, he also supported the Seattle- based company West Coast Goalkeeping in the design and marketing of goalkeeper gloves . Parallel to his professional career, he also worked as an assistant and goalkeeping coach at Brandeis University from 2013 to 2014 , where he was occasionally entrusted with the recruitment of high school juniors and seniors. On December 13, 2014, Soffner married his fiancée in Randolph , Massachusetts .

He then largely retired from football and began working as a leasing manager at The Beach Company , a real estate development company based in Southern California , in February 2015 . After one year, he was promoted to Assistant Property Manager in February 2016 and is still active as such in real estate development today (as of February 2018).
