Lunda Sul is a province in the northeast of the African state Angola .

Location and geography

The province of Lunda Sul is located in the far east of Angola, about 700 km east of the capital Luanda . It borders in the north on the province of Lunda Norte , in the east on the Democratic Republic of the Congo , in the south on the provinces Moxico and Bié and in the west on Malanje .

The area is covered with dry savannah, only remnants of tropical rainforest can be found in the Cassai Valley . This forms the east and south borders of Lunda Sul and is the most important river in the province. With the upper reaches of the Cuango , Lunda Sul has a share in another large river in the region.

The province of Lunda Sul has around 629,000 inhabitants (2019 estimate) on an area of ​​45,649 km². The capital of the province is Saurimo . The province is divided into four districts ( Municípios ), which are further divided into ten municipalities (Comunas).

economy

Economically, the province is characterized by peanut cultivation , which is mainly carried out around Saurimo . Corn is also grown in the south of the province . Other agricultural products include rice , cassava, and grains .

The most important mineral raw materials include diamonds as well as manganese and iron ores . With the Catoca mine , the fourth largest diamond mine in the world is located in Lunda Sul.

The main road from Luanda to Lubumbashi crosses the province from west to east.

population

The original population of the province belongs to the Lunda and Chokwe ethnic groups , which are historically closely linked. They mainly do agriculture. There are also many immigrants from other parts of the country who work for the Endiama or as independent diamond prospectors.
