Médina is one of the 19 districts (Communes d'arrondissement du Sénégal) of Dakar , the capital of Senegal .
geography
Médina is located in the southwest of the Cap-Vert peninsula . The municipality extends compactly from the east side of the bay of Soumbedioune in the southwest to the A1 to the northeast.
The municipality has an area of 2.4 km². Neighboring clockwise are the districts of Gueule Tapée-Fass-Colobane in the north-west and north, Hann-Bel Air in the north-east and in the south-east Dakar Plateau , the center of the metropolis.
In terms of urban planning, the urban district of Médina has a uniform, chessboard-like street pattern that adjoins the northwest of the city center. Only two main roads that cross it from the center do not follow this pattern. On the one hand, there is the Corniche ouest , which follows the course of the coast. And then the Avenue du General de Gaulle, on its way north, divides the southern tip of the Cap-Vert Peninsula roughly in the middle into a western and an eastern half. A third thoroughfare, the Avenue Blaise Diagne , continued on the Avenue Cheikh Anta Diop (formerly: Route de Ouakam ), strictly follows the checkerboard pattern through the middle of Médina and connects the districts of the west coast with each other.
The city district is almost completely built up and very densely populated. The only exception is the coastal strip, where the largest cemetery near the city center is located, the Muslim Cimetière de Soumbédioune , which covers around twelve hectares .
population
The last censuses showed the following population figures for the city district:
year | Residents |
---|---|
1988 | ... |
2002 | 129,470 |
2013 | 81,982 |
Infrastructure and culture
The Médina district includes the touristically significant artisan village of Village artisanal de Soumbedioune on the east side of Soumbedioune Bay. The busy Corniche ouest is enclosed underground at the level of this facility.
In Médina itself there is no connection to Autoroute 1 , which leads from the city center to the new Dakar-Blaise Diagne Airport . However, the closest access roads are not far away. One is in the city center at the beginning of the A1 and the next in Colobane.
