Malahide Castle ( Irish Caisleán Mhullach Íde ) is a castle near the seaside resort Malahide , 14 km north of the Irish capital Dublin in County Fingal . Parts of the castle, which is located in the 1.1 km² Malahide Demesne Regional Park (the rest of the original castle grounds), date back to the 12th century.

history

The property has existed since 1185, when Richard Talbot , a knight who accompanied King Henry II of England to Ireland in 1174, was awarded the "lands and port of Malahide" by him. The oldest parts of the castle date back to the 12th century and the Talbot family lived there for 791 years, from 1185 to 1976, with one exception from 1649 to 1660 when Oliver Cromwell assigned the property to Miles Corbet after the reconquest of Ireland . Corbet was hanged after Cromwell's discharge and the castle returned to the Talbots. During the reign of King Edward IV (1461–1483) the castle was significantly expanded and in 1765 the towers were added.

The property survived losses such as the Battle of the Boyne , when 14 members of the owner family went to the great hall for breakfast that morning and all were dead that evening. It also survived the Penal Laws (laws against Catholics and other “apostates” from the Anglican Church), even if the family remained Catholic until 1774.

In 1918, during the First World War , a take-off and landing site for airships was established on the castle grounds , used by the airships at the Anglesey Air Force Base in Wales , which launched attacks against submarines in the Irish Sea . It was planned to station airships here from 1919, but this plan was abandoned at the end of the war.

In the 1920s, James Boswell's private records were discovered in the castle and Lord Talbot of Malahide's great-grandchildren sold them to the American collector Ralph Heyward Isham (1890–1955).

Ultimately, the 7th Baron Talbot inherited Malahide Castle and its estate and, when he died in 1973, it fell to his sister '' Rose ''. Rose sold the castle to the Republic of Ireland, also in order to be able to pay inheritance tax. Much of the facility, including furniture in particular, had to be pre-sold, causing a significant public dispute, but private collectors and the state managed to save some of it.

Visit of the property

The castle, with its smaller attractions, was operated as a tourist attraction for many years by Dublin Tourism , who worked with the Fingal County Council, which owned the entire property. Business partner today is Shannon Heritage , which in turn named subcontractors, e. B. Avoca Handweavers for the gift shop and coffee shop.

The castle itself can be visited on a guided tour for an entrance fee. The famous Gothic knight's hall can also be rented for private banquets. The most famous rooms of the castle are the Oak Room and the Knight's Hall, in which set pieces from the family history of the Talbots are exhibited. In the courtyard behind the castle there is a café, a souvenir shop and other shops.

Malahide Castle is located in an extensive estate

The Talbot Botanic Gardens ( botanical garden ) behind the castle, which consists of several acres of plants and lawns, as well as an enclosed garden with 1.6 hectares and seven greenhouses, including one from the Victorian era . Many plants from the southern hemisphere, especially from Chile and Australia , can be found there. The gardens show the passion of the 7th Baron Talbot de Malahide , who collected plants in the mid-20th century.

The property includes one of the few examples of 18th century landscaped parks consisting of wide lawns surrounded by a protective belt of trees. They are freely accessible; there are a number of entrances and parking lots.

In addition to the forest trails and a designated "Exercise Trail", the park offers sports fields, e.g. B. a cricket ground and various football fields , a golf course with 9 holes, a pitch and putt course with 18 holes, tennis courts and a boules pitch .

There is a pavilion with a café and other facilities on the golf course.

There is an extensive children's playground by the castle.

At certain times of the year a tram connects the castle with the train station. A tourist bus starts its tour from Malahide Castle twice a day and goes to Howth .

Previous exhibitions

Two major exhibitions had to move out of the property between 2010 and 2011, as the park was to be presented under new management. One of them is presented elsewhere today, the other is still waiting to be reopened.

  • The Tara's Palace Museum of Childhood moved to the 2011 Powerscourt Gardens in Enniskerry order.
  • The Fry Model Railway was housed in Malahide Castle from 1988-2010. In 2019 it will be installed in the restored Casino House , a former hunting lodge of the Talbot de Malahide family near the train station.

Cricket

The cricket field is on Lady Acre Field ; the Malahide Cricket Club is located there. It currently serves as the main sports venue in Irish cricket. Since September 2013, the capacity for international games has been expanded to 11,500 spectators with temporary stands. The first test match in Ireland was held there in May 2018 .
