Manfred Butzmann (born September 14, 1942 in Potsdam ) is a German graphic artist.

Life

Manfred Butzmann was born as the son of a gardener in Bornim . After his father was shot dead by Red Army soldiers in the Volkssturm in 1945 , he grew up with relatives on a farm in Eutzsch ( Wittenberg district ). In 1955 his mother brought him back to Potsdam, where he attended high school and finally passed his Abitur in 1961. During this time he was already taking drawing lessons. After graduating from high school, he completed an apprenticeship as an offset retoucher in Berlin and Potsdam from 1961 to 1964. He also worked in Magnus Zeller's painting circle in Caputh ; a work from 1962 was included in 1969 in the 100 panels comprehensive cross-sectional volume on the artistic folk creation in the GDR , graphic mirror .

From 1964 to 1969 Manfred Butzmann studied graphics at the Berlin-Weißensee School of Art with Arno Mohr , Werner Klemke and Klaus Wittkugel . From 1988 to 1993 he was a guest lecturer here.

After marrying the landscape architect Eva Butzmann, the couple moved into an apartment at Parkstrasse 36 in Berlin-Pankow in 1966 . The daughter Iris was born in 1966, Charlotte in 1972 and Johanna in 1983.

From 1970 he worked as a freelance graphic artist, initially as a book illustrator . From 1973 to 1977 he was a master student at the Academy of Arts (Berlin) with Werner Klemke. The master class course was interrupted in 1976 when Manfred Butzmann had to serve as reservist in the NVA . Inspired by the sadness of life in the barracks, the series of etchings Impressions was created .

He then worked initially as a book illustrator and cover designer, but since 1977 he has also created prints and watercolors, photo posters and postcards. From 1971 he designed the posters for his exhibitions as offset lithographs himself; as a rule, they were printed in the Graetz print shop in Berlin . After 1976 he took part in numerous pleinairs at which numerous artists met to paint outdoors.

In 1989/90 he worked on the committee of inquiry into the police attacks on October 7 and 8, 1989 in Berlin. After that he worked on several projects. In 1991 he received the Käthe Kollwitz Prize of the Academy of Arts, in 1993 the third prize for his design for a memorial to the burning of books in Berlin and in 1999 the Ferdinand von Quast Medal of the Berlin State Monuments Office.

Manfred Butzmann has a particular preference for rubs . He made numerous inspections in old Berlin hallways, on streets, but also on tombstones and doors.

Manfred Butzmann has lived and worked in Potsdam-Bornim since 2007.
