Manfred Gruber (born January 24, 1951 in Erkshausen, a district of Rotenburg an der Fulda near Bad Hersfeld ) is a German painter , graphic artist and set designer .

Life

Gruber comes from a family that had already produced church painters and restorers . He studied painting , sculpture and stage design at the Kunsthochschule Kassel as well as at the University of Applied Sciences in Kassel (both universities are now part of the University of Kassel ) . Several study trips took him to Florence , where he fine-tuned his artistic techniques and examined the construction principles of classical buildings.

Gruber was from 1978 in the successor of Heinz Ludwig (1910–1977) at the Bad Hersfeld Festival and from 1987/1988 at the State Drama Theaters in Berlin as head of equipment and chief stage designer. He designed the interior design several times for the display of the Bad Hersfeld monastery ruins , the largest Romanesque church ruin in the world, which can accommodate 1636 visitors. Gruber stretched fluorescent Trevira threads through the ruins for the set of Shakespeare's “ The Storm ” (1985).

The German contribution to the World Expo 1992 in Seville with the experience stations “The dream of flying”, “Discoveries and inventions”, “City and urban life”, “Nature and the environment” as well as “Brandenburg Gate” and the “Carousel of fools and rogues und Adventurer ”, was created - both in the artistic implementation and in the realization - under Gruber's direction as chief set designer in the“ BerlinAtelier ”and on site in Spain. For the 1998 Expo in Lisbon, Manfred Gruber qualified as an “idea generator” in the competition for the German Pavilion. Gruber also designed the stage design for the “Africa Pavilion” for the EXPO 2000 in Hanover .

From 1992 to 2009 he was the equipment director of the Aalto Theater , the Essen opera house . As a guest stage designer, he is also engaged at numerous theaters, operas and musicals, including the Theater Basel , the Komische Oper Berlin , the Theater des Westens in Berlin, the State Theater Innsbruck and the Saarland State Theater . He worked several times with the choreographer Richard Wherlock .

Gruber also works as a painter. He has presented his oil paintings , watercolors and prints in exhibitions at home and abroad since the 1970s. In his style his style is partly based on painters from the Baroque period .
