Manfred Opel

Manfred Opel (born July 27, 1938 in Bayreuth ) is a German politician ( SPD ), engineer , entrepreneur and brigadier general a. D. the Bundeswehr . From 1988 to 2002 he was a member of the German Bundestag .

Military career and studies

Promotions

After graduating from high school in Bayreuth in 1958, Opel joined the German Armed Forces as an officer candidate . He was trained in 1958/59 in Bückeburg and Leipheim as well as at the Air Force Officer School (OSLw) in Neubiberg. From 1959 to 1963, he trained as a technical officer at the technical college in Neubiberg. In 1963 he graduated with a degree in automotive engineering. From 1964 to 1968 he studied aerospace engineering at the Technical University of Munich ( graduate engineer 1970). In 1969/70 he studied as a scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation at NASA in Huntsville, Alabama.

In 1970/71 he was the squadron chief of the maintenance squadron at Fighter Bomber Wing 32 in Lechfeld. From 1971 to 1973 he completed the 16th general staff course (L) at the command academy of the Bundeswehr (FüAkBw) in Hamburg. 1973/74 he was Head of Department A4a in the Air Force Support Group Command South (LwUGrp Kdo S) in Heidelberg. In 1974 he moved to the office of State Secretary Siegfried Mann in the Federal Ministry of Defense in Bonn as a personal advisor for management and systems analysis .

In 1978 he was a participant of the 52nd NATO Defense College (NDC) in Rome and then became head of the "Strategic Planning" unit at the International Military Staff (IMS) in Brussels. In 1981 he earned a Masters of Arts in International Relations from Boston University in Boston, Massachusetts. In 1981 he went to Husum as commander of the 7th Air Force Supply Regiment. From 1983 to 1985 he was Chief of Staff of the Air Force Support Command in Cologne-Wahn and from 1985 to 1987 Head of the Logistics Staff Department at the Air Force Command (Fü LV) in Bonn. In 1987 he was appointed General for Air Force Matters of Armaments in the Air Force Office (LwA) in Cologne-Wahn. In 1988 Opel retired from service.

Political party

In 1968 he joined the SPD. From 1993 to 1999 Opel was chairman of the SPD district association in North Friesland . He was a member of the security policy advisory board of the party executive.

MP

On June 20, 1988, Opel succeeded the retired MP Günther Jansen in the Bundestag . Until 2002 he was a member of the German Bundestag . From 1998 he was deputy defense policy spokesman for the SPD parliamentary group and since October 2000 spokesman for the SPD MdB state group in Schleswig-Holstein. He was u. a. Member of the Finance and Defense Committees and the Parliamentary Assembly of NATO .

Manfred Opel was elected to the Bundestag in 1998 as a directly elected member of the constituency of North Friesland - Dithmarschen-Nord and before that he always entered the Bundestag via the Schleswig-Holstein state list.

Civil life

After leaving politics, he became the owner of an engineering office for technology, training, economic and environmental protection issues and art trade in Husum. He also became a managing partner of the international freight forwarding company HOMLOG GmbH in Angermünde as well as MARIA GmbH (2000–2004) and MUTABOR GmbH in Ueckermünde.

He is a member of the Public Services, Transport and Traffic and Workers Welfare Union .

Manfred Opel is married and has three children.
