life and career

Maqbul Fida Husain came from a Muslim Indian family. His mother passed away when he was one and a half years old. His father remarried and they moved to Indore , where Husain attended school. In 1935 he went to Bombay to attend the Sir JJ School of Art . He started there to make a living painting movie posters. He became known as an artist in the late 1940s. In 1947 he joined the Progressive Artists Group , an artists' association founded by Francis Newton Souza with the aim of breaking with artistic conventions and developing an Indian avant-garde with international aspirations. In 1952, M. F. Husain had his first solo exhibition abroad, namely in Zurich . In the following years his work was shown in Europe and the United States. In 1956/57 Husain, who was interested in film, made the acquaintance of Roberto Rossellini and traveled with the director through India while he was filming India Matri Bhumi .

His first film, the documentary Through the Eyes of a Painter , won the Golden Bear in the short film category at the 1967 Berlinale .

Maqbul Fida Husain became India's most highly endowed painter; his canvases have garnered up to $ 2 million in recent Christie’s auctions. In recognition of his achievements, Husain was appointed to the Rajya Sabha , the upper house of the Indian parliament, for six years in 1987 .

The actress Madhuri Dixit became his muse for a series of paintings , he also shot the film Gaja Gamini with her . He produced the film Meenaxi: A Tale of Three Cities with the actress Tabu . His autobiography is to be filmed under the title The Making of the Painter .

In 1966 he was awarded the Padma Shri , in 1973 the Padma Bhushan and in 1991 he also received the Padma Vibhushan .

In the 1990s, controversy arose over some of M. F. Husain's paintings. The controversial works date from the 1970s and depict naked Hindu deities. After the images in a 1996 Hindi were printed -Magazine, the public uproar and members of the escalated Hindu nationalist party Shiv Sena broke into Husain's house, where they destroyed works of art. Husain then went into exile in London for a while. A complaint against him for "promoting hostilities between different groups by painting the Hindu goddesses Durga and Sarasvati in a way that hurt the feelings of Hindus" was rejected by the Delhi High Court in 2004. Husain was briefly arrested at the beginning of 2006 on the same matter for "violating popular feeling". In some cities in India, injunctions were obtained against exhibitions of his works. Protests against him also led to the closure of an exhibition of his works in London. The artist then lived mainly with his son in Dubai , while in India the confiscation of his property was pushed ahead.

In response to these disputes, admirers of Husain, including Shashi Tharoor , petitioned the Indian government to grant him the Bharat Ratna , India's highest civil order. They argue that M. F. Husain's life and work can now be understood as an allegory for the changing modalities of the secular in modern India and the challenges that the history of the nation brings with it for many. It is now the right and decisive time to honor him for his courage and dedication to the cultural renaissance of his beloved country.

In September 2008, the Supreme Court of India finally rejected Hindu nationalist attempts to prosecute Husain for his paintings of naked Hindu deities.

In March 2010, he became a citizen of Qatar . Husain died of a heart attack in London on June 9, 2011, and was buried in Brookwood Cemetery the following day .
