history

Büdingen, then known as Buodinga , was already a parish in the 10th century . According to a parish visit protocol, only three families lived in Büdingen in 1657 as a result of the plague and the Thirty Years' War . This led to Hilhaben taking over the administration of the Büdinger parish. In 1728 Büdingen received a new church, albeit without a tower . A tower was finally built in 1755.

In the course of the political changes that were triggered by the French Revolution , Büdingen in Lorraine became part of the newly formed Moselle department and was assigned to the diocese of Metz . Around 1800 Büdingen was a succursal parish (auxiliary parish) in the canton of Sierck . After the end of French rule in 1815, the place became part of the Prussian Rhine Province . In 1827 the parish of Büdingen , which now again belongs to the diocese of Trier, was assigned to the dean's office in Merzig.

In 1825, the church from 1728, which had meanwhile become too small, was demolished and replaced by a new building, with the tower from 1755 remaining. The plans for the new church building were drawn up by architect Odenheimer, while master builder Nikolaus Gill (Hilringen) was responsible for the execution of the plan. The benedication of the new church was made on October 26th, 1825 by Dean Michels from Merzig.

In 1920, the church tower was extended according to plans by the architect Peter Marx ( Trier ) by adding a slate-covered bell storey with an onion dome on top of the existing tower . Thanks to the work done in 1923 donation of 1000 dollars of in Chicago living and from Weiler (northeast situated neighboring village of Büdingen) coming US-American Nicholas Weber was a new organ , a clock tower purchased and five bells, and expansion work at the gallery made become.

In 1961–62, 1981 and 1984 restoration work was carried out on and in the church.

With effect from September 1, 2011, the parish of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary in Büdingen became part of the Merzig-Hilringen parish community in the Merzig deanery. This parish community also includes the parishes of St. Petrus in Ketten in Hilringen, St. John the Baptist in Mondorf and St. Laurentius in Schwemlingen .
