Marina Gilardoni (born March 4, 1987 in Goldingen , St. Gallen ) is a Swiss skeleton pilot and former bobsleigh slider.

Career

Marina Gilardoni comes from Goldingen in the canton of St. Gallen , now part of the municipality of Eschenbach , and lives in Siebnen . Since childhood, she has been involved in athletics and competitions. In 2007 she joined bobsleigh as a pusher and, in addition to numerous top 15 placements in the bobsleigh World Cup, she achieved two titles at junior world championships - in 2008 with Fabienne Meyer and 2010 with Sabina Hafner - as well as the title at the Swiss championships with Hafner in 2010.

In 2010, Gilardoni switched to the sport of skeleton and finished fifth on her international debut at the European Cup in Igls . In addition, in her first season in skeleton she won gold at the Swiss starting championships and silver at the Swiss skeleton championships behind Maya Pedersen . A year later, Marina Gilardoni started in the World Cup for the first time . All in all, she was able to place three times in the top 15 and finished in 21st place in the final ranking. She finished the European Championship in Altenberg in 9th place, the World Championship in Lake Placid in 20th place. In the 2012/13 World Cup , Gilardoni did not get beyond 16th place in La Plagne and 20th overall, but won her first Swiss championship. At the 2013 European Championships in Igls, she placed 13th; At the World Championships in St. Moritz , she finished 15th in the individual and fifth in the team competition.

In the 2013/14 World Cup winter , Marina Gilardoni achieved her best results to date: After a fifth place in Lake Placid and three other top 10 places, she reached 7th place in the overall classification as well as in the FIBT 2013/14 ranking She was sixth at the European Championships in Königssee . She represented Switzerland at the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi , where she finished 18th. In the following season, Gilardoni placed in the top ten in seven of eight races of the season in the World Cup, narrowly missed the podium once and finished eighth overall. She also finished eighth at the 2015 Skeleton World Championship . In the winter of 2015/16 Gilardoni achieved her first podium in the World Cup with a third place in the third race of the season in Königssee; at the next World Cup station in Lake Placid she was second. At the home world cup in St. Moritz, she came third again and won bronze at the European championship . Gilardoni finished fourth at the World Championships in Igls. In the last World Cup race of the winter she was third again and in the overall World Cup she reached fifth place.
