Marion Loretta Reid

Marion Loretta Reid , CM , O.PEI (born January 2, 1929 in North Rustico , Prince Edward Island ) is a Canadian politician . From 1990 to 1995 she was Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island.

Reid trained as a teacher and taught at various schools for over twenty years. She was also a member of several commissions in the education sector and was a leading member of various charitable organizations. As a member of the Prince Edward Island Progressive Conservative Party , she successfully ran for a seat in the Legislative Assembly in 1979 . In 1982 and 1986 she was re-elected. In 1984 she became the first woman ever to be elected Speaker of the Provincial Parliament. Governor General Ray Hnatyshyn swore in Reid on August 16, 1990 as the first Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island. She held this representative office until August 30, 1995.
