The Martin Luther Church in Reusrath is a Protestant parish church and mother church of numerous parishes in Langenfeld , Leverkusen and Monheim .

history

General

In 1672, a religious settlement was concluded between the Elector of Brandenburg and the Count Palatine of Pfalz-Neuburg , which again allowed the Lutherans at Reusrath to practice their religion freely. Reusrath then became the center of the few Christians of this faith between Wupper and Itter , between the Rhine and Bergisches Land .

As a result, the Evangelical Lutheran Congregation in Reusrath was (re) founded as early as 1683. Your church seal , from the same year, shows a man with an ax , a healthy and a stunted tree and the old rectory with its bell tower . Initially, the congregation did not have its own church building , but set up itself in the former parish and church house , which, according to an agreement with the Catholic Church, was allowed to be built “in the corner furthest away from the Catholic church ”. Aside from its ground floor furnished apartment for the priest , the building received via an outside staircase, a church with 162 seats, a sacristy , a simple altar and a small organ . Initially only a few windows were glazed, a roof turret with a small bell was added in 1687. All Protestant Lutheran Christians from Hilden , Hitdorf , Monheim , Opladen , Reusrath, Rheindorf , Richrath and Urdenbach belonged to the parish area .

Church and furnishings

The Martin Luther Church was built for the growing community in 1792/94. Poverty and times of war , however, only allowed a simple interior design of the church , which was declared a monument in 1985 . In 1802 the organ was acquired from the dissolved Cologne collegiate church " St. Maria ad Gradus " . Its substructure dates from the 1st half of the 17th century, the upper structure from the high baroque period (1729). The high structure of the organ above the altar and the pulpit is probably typical of Bergisch baroque churches, but it is unique in Langenfeld.

To the first church building

Right next to the church is the former parish and church house, which was also listed as a monument in 1988 and was built in 1683 . The building served the community until the new church in 1794 as a church . During renovation work in 1986–1988, an inscription was uncovered under the beam of the ceiling of the church hall . She names the first three clergy in the church. Today the building houses a deaconry and the sexton 's apartment .

Development of Protestant communities

Numerous Protestant congregations can be traced back to Reusrath. This includes all Protestant churches in Langenfeld, provided there are no free church communities. In addition to the pastor's office in Reusrath, these are the pastor's offices Immigrath (first assistant preacher 1901), Langenfeld-Mitte (1954), Langenfeld-Mitte II (1968), Immigrath II (1970), Wiescheid (1971) and Richrath II (1977). The first Protestant pastor's post in Reusrath, like the one in Richrath, dates from around 1580. While the former only existed until 1625, the latter was not dissolved until 1648. Nevertheless, a new community was brought into being in Reusrath early on, namely from 1683, which has existed since then without interruption to the present day. Other new foundations from Reusrath were in Opladen (independent municipality from 1864) with foundations in Wiesdorf (1904), Bürrig (1923) and Küppersteg (1933). Furthermore, parishes were established in Monheim (1839), Hitdorf (1913) and Rheindorf (1933) and the simultaneous church in Galkhausen is looked after from Reusrath.
