Walls from the east

location

The place is located south of the Danube in its floodplain, on the first flood-free plains in a floodplain landscape, about two kilometers from the Lower Bavarian-Upper Bavarian border. Spatially, the place has almost grown together with the city of Neustadt. Regensburg is about 45 km to the east and Ingolstadt 30 km to the west. Munich is about 90 km south of the town.

history

Individual finds indicate that the Celts were already present in the local area .

The first documentary mention was made in 899 as "ad murum". Furthermore, in the late Middle Ages, the "Lords of Walls" can be documented again and again.

From 1818 to 1837, the village of Schwaig , 5 km to the west , which is now also a district of the city of Neustadt, belonged to the political community of Mauern.

The municipality of Mauern, to which the Neustadt station (train station) also belonged, had an area of 552.60 hectares .

Since the Neustadt train station and, as a result, the first business settlements were located in the corridor walls, the site had been administered by the city of Neustadt since 1942 for infrastructural reasons. In 1946, when Mauern was incorporated into the city, it finally lost its political independence.

church

The essentially Romanesque church “Our Lady” dates from the 12th century and was given baroque elements in the 18th century . The church has been the destination of many pilgrimages since the 15th century .

Economy and Infrastructure

The crude oil refinery of Bayernoil GmbH is located nearby . There is also a medium-sized company that produces technical textiles.

A large quarry pond to the west of the town, created from intensive gravel construction, was converted into the “Mauerner See recreation area and leisure area” in 2008.

The place has about 800 inhabitants. Due to increased identification of residential areas and structural change, walls are losing their originally rural character.
