from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Max Welcker (born December 4, 1878 in Augsburg ; † June 30, 1954 there ) was a German elementary school teacher , composer , organist , choir director , music teacher and publisher of musical works.

Life

Max Welcker studied at the teachers' seminar in the former Augustinian monastery in Lauingen . At first he lived on in Augsburg. After his apartment was destroyed in the air raids on Augsburg , Welcker moved to Krumbach in 1944 . There he was active until shortly before his death in 1954 as the conductor of the “Chorgemeinschaft Liederkranz Krumbach” and as the cantor of St. Michael .

As a composer, Max Welcker was active in both ecclesiastical and secular areas. Most of his works have been published by Anton Böhm & Sohn in Augsburg. For this publisher he also worked as an editor of works by other composers.

reception

Max Welcker's works were also distributed outside Bavaria during his lifetime. According to statistics, his Latin masses alone were performed in at least 26 Austrian churches in the first third of the 20th century.

His compositions are still in the repertoire of numerous choirs and ensembles - including simple church choirs, but also ensembles such as the Renner Ensemble , Spatzen-Quartett Regensburg and dimuthea.

On the official CD for the Bavarian Festival , a three-day event of the Free State of Bavaria in July 2000 in Regensburg on the occasion of the turn of the millennium , 11 of the 16 pieces were composed by Max Welcker.

The Schwäbische Zeitung wrote about his St. John Passion that "compared to the great passions, for example by Johann Sebastian Bach, [...] in terms of the cast it was modest, but not [...] what his own." Effect concerns. "

In 2018, a double CD "Lichterglanz vom Himmelszelt" was released in Dresden, which dealt with the Christmas carols composed by Max Welcker, including 18 previously unpublished German Christmas carols penned by Max Welcker. The 2 CDs also contain a large collection of compositions in which Max Welcker wrote "Silent Night! Holy Night!" by Franz Xaver Gruber processed and of course all six stanzas by Joseph Mohr in the original.
