The Meisental is an approximately 1.5 km long notch valley in the Haardt , the eastern edge of the Palatinate Forest ( Rhineland-Palatinate ). In the boundaries of the urban district Neustadt an der Weinstrasse , it separates the south-east foothills of the Schlossberg from the south and south-west foothills of Wolfsberg, rising from south-east to north-west to north, in the 554  m high wine region .

geography

location

The Weinbiet massif lies on the western shoulder of the Upper Rhine Graben . This collapsed about 50 million years ago and was later replenished by deposited sediments to the level of today's Upper Rhine Plain .

The Meisental has its valley head almost 400 m southeast of the Weinbiet summit at about 376  m , the valley exit to the Neustadt district of Haardt is at about 195  m . The 409.3  m high Schlossberg runs along the east and north-east side of the Meisental , while the Wolfsberg ( 490.7  m ) rises to the south and south-west .

Waters

The Meisental is traversed by the Sulzwiesengraben , which has largely shaped the valley. It arises from a piece below the Talschlusses to about 276  m height and opens after 2.5 km run further downwards in the core city of New Town ( 132  m ) from the left in the Floßbach . This is a left derivative of the Speyerbach , which flows back into it after a good 1.5 km.

Attractions

To the left above the valley exit, on the spur of the Schlossberg, the Winzingen Castle and Haardter Castle are close to each other, and to the right of the Wolfsberg is the Mediterranean- style Dr.-Welsch-Terrasse park . Other cultural and natural monuments as well as lookout points in the Rhine valley are mainly on the Wolfsberg and can be reached via hiking trails .

biology

Pine trees together with spruce and fir trees are the main vegetation on the sole and on the flanks of the Meisental. Since the valley flank in the northeast, including the nature reserve, is to the windward side of the prevailing westerly and southwesterly winds in the region, it receives somewhat more rainfall than the rest of the valley. On the water-rich side, more moisture-loving plants such as mosses and ferns thrive under the conifers ; they form the biotopes of the Haardtrand - Schloßberg nature reserve established in 1992 and provide shelter and shelter for small organisms worthy of protection . Protective purpose is the maintenance and development of a terrain, which in the region of Talausgangs with vineyard terraces and fruit land begins by dry walls are marked and bushwood and Saumbiotope, and passes up the valley in woodland and forest edge surfaces. The nature reserve is around 500 m long and extends up the slope a good 50 m from the bottom of the valley.

Traffic and hiking trails

First straight up through the valley floor, then to the right in serpentines over the Schlossberg and past the Haubenwascherteich hut , the asphalted main driveway to the wine region , which is open to motor vehicle traffic , leads . Hiking trails through the valley to the summit are shorter, but have steeper slopes than the road.

A good 600 m upwards from the valley exit to the Meisental car park , the street is built on with residential buildings on both sides; In this area the Sulzwiesengraben runs underground .
