The place name is derived from the name of the water body of the same name, which is supposed to mean "stream that carries a lot of water in March".

Towards the end of the 18th century there were 12 properties in Merzbach (2 courtyards, 3 two-thirds courtyards, 4 quarter courtyards, 2 grace houses, 1 community shepherd's house). The high court exercised the Obervogteiamt Virnsberg . The Teutonic Order Coming Virnsberg held the village and community rulership and the lordship over all properties .

As part of the community edict, Merzbach was assigned to the Buch tax district formed in 1808 . It also belonged to the rural community of Buch formed in 1811 . On July 1, 1972, Merzbach was incorporated into Trautskirchen as part of the regional reform .
