Michael Anthony Bilandic (* 13. February 1923 in Chicago , Illinois ; † 16th January 2002 ) was an American lawyer , politician of the Democratic Party and mayor of Chicago .

Life

After attending De La Salle High School in Chicago in 1940, the son of Croatian immigrants began studying at Saint Mary's University of Minnesota , where he earned a Bachelor of Science (BS). During the Second World War , he did his military service in the US Marine Corps , where he was last promoted to first lieutenant . A subsequent postgraduate studies of law at the Law School of DePaul University , he graduated with a Juris Doctor from (JD) and was after the lawyer's approval in the state of Illinois as a lawyer in Chicago operates.

He began his political career in 1969 when he was elected to the Chicago City Council as a candidate for the Democratic Party and represented the 11th constituency there until 1976 . After the death of longtime mayor Richard J. Daley on December 20, 1976, he was elected mayor of Chicago on December 28, 1976 by the city council as its successor.
