Michael Janisch (musician)

Michael Janisch (born February 2, 1979 in Red Wing (Minnesota) ) is an American jazz musician ( double bass , electric bass , composition ) and music producer who lives in London .

Live and act

Janisch, who grew up in Ellsworth, Wisconsin , began playing the piano when he was four. At the age of ten he switched to the bass guitar . He also played football and was also active as a track and field athlete. He attended Minnesota State University, Mankato, where he received a degree in history and acted as an athlete on both the second division football team and as a runner. After an accident, he turned back to music and used a stay at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse to learn the double bass. Then he studied at Berklee College of Music (2000). After graduating, he first moved to New York City and then to London with his British wife in 2005.

From 2005 he worked with the TransAtlantic Collective , which he led with the alto saxophonist Patrick Cornelius . The group also included pianists such as Kristjan Randalu , John Escreet , Dan Tepfer and Jason Rebello , trumpeters such as Quentin Collins, Jay Phelps, Ambrose Akinmusire and Avishai Cohen as well as Colin Stranahan and Paul Wiltgen on drums . In 2008 the album Traveling Song was released with this ensemble.

Janisch played on his 2010 debut album Purpose Built with Walter Smith III , Patrick Cornelius, Jason Palmer , Johnathan Blake , Aaron Goldberg , Phil Robson, Mike Moreno, Jim Hart and Paul Booth . The album Paradigm Shift followed in 2015 . In 2010 he founded the record label Whirlwind Recordings, for which he also produces. Since then 40 albums have been made there, among others by Michael Gibbs , Lee Konitz , Simon Purcell, Jeff Williams and Andy Milne .

Janisch has also worked with Joe Lovano , Dianne Reeves , Seamus Blake , George Garzone , Aaron Parks , Kurt Rosenwinkel , Will Vinson, Mark Turner , Kenny Wheeler , Quincy Jones , Evan Parker , Gary Husband , Shirley Horn , Gary Burton , Ingrid Jensen , Wynton Marsalis , Kurt Elling , John Dankworth , Roy Hargrove and Clarence Penn .

Janisch also teaches bass at Trinity College of Music , where he was a professor, and at the Royal Academy of Music .
